About a month or two ago I read somewhere on the site that reviewers were required or at least highly encouraged to acknowledge that any free reviews were just that, free. As soon as I read this, I began mentioning that the products I reviewed were free. Normally, I place a mention of it under personal comments in the review section. Recently, someone mentioned that was not necessary. Is it important to reveal that the toy for review was a free product?

I think you only have to do this is your review is posted off site. If the review is posted on the site however, the acknowledgment is built in to the review and can be seen at the bottom in pink right above the reviewers name, rating, and the voting area.

You can read more about this at the Federal Trade Commission guidelines. The new 'rules' are to keep EF reviews in compliance with new regulations that respond to the advent of internet advertising. Hope this helps!

Here on EF, when you review a product, the pertinent FTC information is automatically inserted at the bottom of your review for you.

If you do an off-site review and use the widget provided that shows the product info and price, you will find the FTC info will appear in that widget as well. If you do not use the widget, then you will have to include the relevant FTC info yourself.
Truthfully, mentioning in your on-site review that your toy is free ends up being redundant because of the auto-inserted message.
