Are you interested in having the #Rumble continued?

Hey everyone!

I really like hosting Eden's Review Rumble, but the participation is not where I'd like it to be

So I wanted to discuss whether you wanted to have it at all.. If you do, please share your thoughts on what the rules should be.

ok, I'll go first
Reviews should be nominated by the community members!

Might I suggest having less nominations ? Even if I had read all of the last ones up for vote, I wouldn't remember them. So would have to re-read them all to make a fair choice.

In the past I felt some members nominated their friends or one in their little clique. Some would tell reviewer's,"I'm going to nominate it for the Rumble" I felt they were just trying to get on their good side.

And like in any contest, sometimes there are "sore losers" I'm sad and sorry to say. Then resentment over, "Hey, mine was great!" "Are you kidding, I didn't win!"

I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade. Just being honest and have 2 spare bits to give.

I am all for, rewarding the community !

Awwww, too bad that happened to you, OHW. Hang in there.(

What about having a particular focus that includes specific criteria a review must meet to be nominated for the Rumble? The focus could change month to month - lots of possibilities. Maybe have the community make the nominations.

No, I think you misread into my comment. No mention of anything happening to me. Is this a prelude to the old days where one member would start in on another ? That drove away members. This is suppose to be a happy, fun place. Not a place where members will not want to return to

Please elaborate on what the #Rumble is. The first thing that comes to my mind is a bunch of Gresaers and Socs fighting over nothing and I know that this is not what you have in mind. I'm a little confused, help me out.

I suppose I shouldn't assume that everyone knows what I'm talking about

Rumble is a long-running Reviews competition. Best reviews are picked then voted on by the community. The winner usually receives a Gift Card.

I agree and if we, as a community, know the communities weak spots (maybe cliques), first thing to ask is 'Will this further the community or help just certain members?'

I'm adding to the 2 cents I put in.

There is also a thinking among newcomers and not as experienced people. We would think 'that is for experienced people, not for us' and then they would think twice about whether they belong here or not. Perhaps something should be in a contest that levels the playing field, like a golf handicap.

I've always liked the rumble and want it to continue. I read every single one of last month's nominations and voted according to which one I liked the best.

I think this should continue. It's just affirmation that someone found the hard work and time x person put in on their review to be beneficial. It's a positive reinforcement kinda thing in my opinion.

I like it. Having you nominate them all made it easier to find all of the new reviews.

I like the rumble. Maybe keep the voting status secret? I've noticed that only a few reviews get votes and this may influence people to only look at those reviews.

Maybe a page most newcomers visit could have short descriptions about some of the key features of the site so they can become aware of them. I don't see the majority of them elsewhere on the site. Reasons vary, I'm sure. But it would help them become aware of & understand, to some degree, different aspects of the site & possibly create more interest.

I actually think this is a great idea, I've thought the same thing before that seeing others votes may influence the way voting goes.

Very good point. It is obvious when reading some of reviews, some put a lot of time in them. And they would appreciate getting kudos for their efforts. Especially new reviewers. The review page/program is not that simple and user friendly. It can be daunting to maneuver. I'm grateful to the members that helped me when I started reviewing. And the encouragement from them.

I would love to see new reviewers get nominated and prizes. Myself I already feel good when I know I turned in a good review. And that it will help others and EdenFantasys.

I also realize established reviewers would like recognition. Like being selected to the DR team.

"Lets get ready to rummmmmbbbble!"

You know that stern looking guy in the tux got paid a lot for just holding the mic and yelling that before each match.

Ok, ok, I know....

I've noticed this about the review votes too Heartthrob. And I think secret ballots is a great idea as well. Thanks for bringing it up.

It's a great Idea and I would totally go for it but, unfortunately, our infrastructure isn't set up for that. Rumble is essentially a poll and while we can vote anonymously, we cannot vote secretly

Yeah, we do need an updated Welcome to the Community post. I'll work on it in the next week or so.
Nevertheless, we do have lots of posts describing what our forum is about, just have to do a little searching.

Everybody, Thank You

Your comments and suggestions are valued and I've read and thought about them all.
It looks like it makes sense to continue with the Rumble - people like it, myself included, and it's a great way to encourage better, thoughtful writing, as well as give out little prizes for a job well done!

Here is what I'm thinking:
- I'll continue nominating the reviews However, you're more than welcome to PM me with a nomination of your favourite review and I'll take a look.
- Voting will remain anonymous Unfortunately, we cannot make it secret at this time.
- Fewer reviews will be nominated I'll try, honestly. It's really hard though to pick 5-7 reviews out of dozens that get published every month

Please keep ideas flowing, Rumble rules are not set in stone by any means.

** I'll have October Rumble out by nex weekend! **

Maybe this might help -

*Using the analogy of comparing apples to oranges; While many reviews written by newcomers are a good start at reviewing, comparing them & and some other reviews to those written by very skilled reviewers isn't plausible. It is much more reasonable to compare apples to apples.

*Keep a running list of reviews as you read & publish them that you think would be an excellent nomination for each months competition. This could make it simpler & generate a list readily available to select from.

It's at least good to keep people from understanding who voted for them in an attempt at minimizing people simply voting for friends. I think trying to keep the rumble options down to 5-10 is a good idea. It sounds like you're on the right track.

Yeah, the voting is always anonymous. But you know, people are always going to vote for their friends or to try and get on someone's good side. It's just human nature.

However, everyone should try and be fair and vote for the review(s) they actually loved.
