I'm on several online dating sites and one thing that is a major turn off for me is when guys have posted pictures of them with their arm around another girl. Most usually caption it to say "This is my friend, blah blah blah" or some even admit it's an ex. It especially bugs me if it's an exceptionally attractive girl, it makes me feel like I can't compete, so why even bother, right? I was talking to my roommate (who is male) about this, and he thinks I don't hold the popular opinion. He argued that it's actually a turn on or attractant for girls because they like to see that a guy has female friends because that means he's not some creeper. What do you guys think? Do you think it's tacky? Do you like it?

Yeah, I think thats tacky. I wouldn't hit up a dude who's pic is him with another chick.

It shows preselection. Maybe don't do it on a dating site but do it on Facebook.

I wrote about how tacky this was in one of my Eden Cafe articles over a year back - "Top Ten Dating Site Photo Mistakes" or something like that.
What's really classy is when the girl in the picture is draped over him and obviously drunk off her ass. Yeah, we know what type you really like, dude - don't complain that that's all you get.
ETA: Found the article. Warning: Snark Ahead

Other. I think it's very tacky but not competition.

I would think that it's tacky and a really bad idea to pick an image with another women on it. Your image should be you unless you are a couple.
The only time it wouldn't be tacky is if it's his sister, mom, or grandma, but that really shouldn't be the avatar for a dating site.

1) What authority does your male roommate have to claim what other women think? That's kind of insulting.

2) It really depends on what's going on the photo, I suppose. I don't know if I'd say it's tacky, but when it comes to dating profiles, it would make me apprehensive. My goal (if I were on a dating site) would be to get to know the person I'm interested in first, rather than their friends, so it would be distracting and more of a turn-off. It does not make me more attracted to them in any way, but yes, sometimes it is intimidating if the other female is very attractive.

I think that it's tacky. If your a guy trying to get girls. Why show other girls in your photos? To make them jealous and not wanna talk to you??
08/30/2012
I can see both sides but personally i probably wouldnt initiate those people. I actually met my bf online (turns out weve known each other for awhile though LOL) but ya he didnt have any pics with girls. Seems to me like a way to set their standard without saying it or something

that actually never bothered me as bad when i was on those sites as the ones that posted pics of their kids did.... thats NOT the place to advertise pictures of children, you never know who's lookin at yoru profile, i'd never return emails to the ones like that... females in pic eh i'd usually assume it was a sister of friend.

Tacky. Turn off and I'd probably just assume he was still in-love or already seeing someone. It'd make me turn and go the other direction NO DOUBT. I don't step on another woman's toes and so I would only think one thing: leave her man alone.

However, I don't date (in a relationship 6 years) and have never done online dating, but I personally would feel similar to you -- it would put me off make me run the other way. It's not cute or attractive.
Quite honestly, in my opinion, your male friend was totally off (on my personal feelings anyhow). I am the girl that would go for the type with little to no other females in their photos because it would say to me: he's really not a... guy who sleeps around or has multiple female partners? I'd be going for the "creeper" with no or few female photos!
LOL on second thought... maybe this is exactly why I have always been a "creep magnet" lol! kIDDING. Kidding.

So if there is another female in the picture I would think he is using her to judge everyone else by. Cut her out of the picture or use a unique approach and take a new picture! Unless it's a picture of his sister run away!!!
08/30/2012
I wouldn't like it. I would feel a sense of competition.
08/30/2012
I can see your roomie's point. It's good to show that the guy isn't a creeper type.
-BUT-
If you're on a dating site, the pictures should really be JUST you and maybe pets. Nothing worse than looking at a few pictures on a girl's page and not knowing whose profile you're looking at. You have to guess by figuring out who the same person is in every photo. I usually write those profiles off without too much time invested.

I agree, if it's a couple looking for people you should have pictures together. The same guy also had a picture up of him with his mom. It's okay, but kinda weird for a dating site.

I agree whole heartily with number one. It's probably why he's still single too. He has this idea that all women are essentially the same, though he admits I'm like the one exception, yet he doesn't want to date me (part of his range-of-attractivenes s spiel which is a whole other rant). He thinks all women date complete jack asses and they don't like nice guys and they don't like geeky/nerdy guys, etc.

I'm also glad you say it can be intimidating if the other female is very attractive. He doesn't agree and says it doesn't mean he's attracted to her and even asked what if it were "a really ugly girl". I don't think he realizes how much women compare themselves to others, regardless of if we're vain or not.

It does seem a bit tacky to me, but hey, whatever!
08/31/2012
It wouldn't really bug me, I put pictures of me with kids, or whatever I feel like up, so it doesn't phase me.
09/02/2012
I wouldn't want to see that. Plus, do those ladies even realize their pics are up on a dating site?
