When my kids were young we did this once for a weekend. If we could afford time off and a trip we usually went somewhere as a family.

I think both are needed, but I doubt I'd leave my children for an extended amount of time, maybe just a night.

We've only done it once, to celebrate our 20th anniversary. They're not so young that it was a problem, and I think it was good for all of us

If I have something planned with my bf I will send the kids to their dad's house. Not sure if that would count as leaving them with family

Don't I wish and most likely they would go with us.

Well, we have children part time these days. We have them part of the week and their parents get them for the other half, so we don't have to dump them off on loved ones.
