That was my first fandom. I moved on from that to a huge variety of other things, but I still have no idea why fic or art involving fictional drawn characters gets me off so much better than live-action stuff!

It's the first fandom for a lot of people, it seems. ;^^ For me, I started not really shipping anything in it, but fandom corrupted me. Shippuden helped a bit with the ages, though.
For me I've kind of gone in the opposite direction- I ran out of good anime to watch and dove head-first into live action. It's a bit more convenient, though. There are generally less developed side-characters, so it's easier to find a ship that there will actually be fans for.
