Polyamory Resources

Contributor: Kirsten A Kirsten A
When I was first venturing into poly, I was gobbling up information to try and figure out how to make it work. I still do, although the gobbling has slowed down. The biggest one for me was the podcast Polyamory Weekly. She just hits you over the head with the skills that you need to do poly. Admittedly, I went through the past 7 years of episodes searching the term "communication" to find some really useful episodes.

Another podcast is on the scene now, Pedestrian Polyamory.

As for books, I read most of the Ethical Slut, and bits and pieces of Opening Up, but neither of these played a really big role in my poly education.

What resources do you use to learn about poly?

I use a lot of stuff on here at EF. Thanks for the links, by the way. I'm just starting out and this is neat. I'm hoping to make my relationship work with these two men.

One other thing I thought of. I am a big fan of Franklin Veaux (especially when he appears on Poly Weekly!). He is very eloquent and very experienced in managing poly. He has an amazing knack for poly, honed by trial-and-error, by the sound of it.

Gobbling up is such a good word for it! When I first was venturing into poly I wanted to learn everything I could, because I was scared of screwing up a good thing. There are so many people out there who have learned lessons the hard way, and are trying hard to share that information with those of us who are new. It's so awesome.

Here's one more really good resource: polyamory.com

I've read a lot of blogs, particularly Sugarbutch and The Pervocracy. I once bought my best friend a copy of The Ethical Slut, but I haven't read it yet - I plan on borrowing it sometime soon.

I'm just starting out, too! I'm happy I've discovered EF to give me some actual community spaces for discussion.

I started listening to Poly Weekly many years ago when I found out about it via the Sex Is Fun podcast. I listened to it even though I had no intention of trying out polyamory myself, mainly because it sounded far too complicated for me and there wasn't anybody in my life I could imagine dating in addition to my partner at the time.

I learned a lot. My life changed. I'm now polyamorous. It's not like it's Minx's fault or anything, but she certainly opened my mind to new ideas. Without Minx, I might have broken up with my long-time partner when the physical distance between us and desire to be with someone else started to get to me. Instead, we talked it over ad nauseam and opened things up. I feel so fortunate to have had my mind opened, so that I can keep all these wonderful people in my life where I want them, without having to cut one person out to make room for another. My heart doesn't work that way!

I bought Opening Up and The Ethical Slut and have skimmed through both, but I can't say I read either cover to cover. They are both such thought-provoking books that I had to stop and think quite a bit.

Thank you for the reminder about Pedestrian Polyamory! I knew it existed somewhere in my mind, but I'm going to go download all the back episodes now. I do love my Poly Weekly, but an additional perspective is always nice.

I loved The Ethical Slut, but like with poly itself, there isn't just ONE resource you have to stick to.
