Polyamory and open relationship defined as the same thing?

Contributor: AngelvMaynard AngelvMaynard
When I see posts on here, sometimes it seems that the two mean the same thing. When I think of them I imagine them as total different ways of having a relationship. To me polyamory is a relationship where all share life and love together within one unit. Open relationship to me means we are together as a couple but can have outside relationships with separate people who may not be involved in the couples unit.
Am I wrong in my thinking?

Not at all the thing is having a polyamourous relationship can mean you also have an open relationship in the sense that you are open as a group to new possibilities. Or like us: My husband and partner haven't found another woman they're interested in forming a committed relationship with. Sigel plays the field and defines our marriage as open. Arch is committed to me and defines our relationship as poly and I m polyfidelitous, preferring not to have casual sex.

Are you totally confused yet? In the broadest sense you are right polyamory is about loving many and sharing life and love with them all as a unit. An open marriage means we are open to having whatever relationship we wish, within set boundaries. Still in those definitions there's a lot of room to be as unique as we are as humans. Face it not even the definition for marriage is cut and dry anymore!

Personally I say just be happy and define yoursef however feels right to you...the definition is sure to change over time anyhow.
