long distance relationships

I'm in month 5 of being away from my girlfriend and it's starting to be very taxing. I really miss her and don't have any idea when she's coming back. She went home for the summer (across the country) and badly damaged her knee at work in August. She has been undergoing physical therapy for almost three months now (they didn't start her on PT until the end of august. for some reason) and we still don't know when she'll come back. We do video chats and talk on IM but it's not the same.

Has anyone been in one and how long were you apart? Did it start long term, or just become that way? What did you do to make it work?

I have only tried LDRs a few times, and it became clear that it's not for me. I ended the relationships. I just don't have the patience, I don't like talking on the phone/video chatting, and I really need the physical, face-to-face attention.

LDRs SUCK and they're not for everyone.

In about two years Master and I plan to be SDR, but we haven't really ironed out if I'm going to her in the UK or she's coming here to me in the US.

Trust & oodles of communication are big factors of making it work. We both have iPod Touches and take advantage of iOS5's new iMessage feature that keeps texting costs down. If I'm in a area without WiFi, we use Kik Messenger, as it works on her iPod and on my Android phone.

Send her a photo or a message every day, it'll let her know you're thinking of her.

I'm really sorry to hear that you're having a rough time right now. Hopefully her knee will heal up well soon. Have you considered visiting her?

I'm in a long distance relationship and have been for close to two years now. We met online, him living in the Netherlands and me living in New York. We only get to see each other twice a year at best so it can be hard. Knowing that I'll be seeing him again in X months really helps so that I know what I can look forward to. We try and keep in contact often, despite our busy schedules, and I knit him things to wear. Just knowing that we are there for each other helps me throughout the day.

My man left for 3 months on an internship. It was too painful so we took a break during the time and dated other people and actually rarely talked. When he got back we were even more in love with each other for having been apart and having met others.

my bf & i have been long distance for the past 6 months. school ended & he went home for the summer while i went back & forth b/w my apartment here at school & back home. he ended up having to take this yr off to work b/c he can't afford to come back to school. when i'm here at school, we're 4 hrs apart, but when i go home for a weekend every so often, we're only 1 hr apart. if he doesn't have to work when i go home, we make plans to get together. we had to do the same thing last summer, too, b/c i stayed here at school to take summer classes all summer. it's hard b/c i don't get to see him very often & video chatting can only do so much. i'm hoping to be able to intern somewhere close to home next semester or just move back home & intern in the summer. either way, i would be closer to him & we would be able to get together more often. i really wanna get an internship, though, b/c then i could graduate in May like i'm planning to & would have my own apartment so he could actually sleep over, which he wouldn't get to do if i live at home.

Me and my boyfriend were in an LDR for a long time. We started out knowing each other in high school, then we started talking on facebook, but by the time we decided we wanted to date, he'd already moved about 5 hours away with his brother. So we started out long distance. We'd usually see each other once a month, for about 3 days at a time. We were like that for about 10 months or so. Then he moved to Illinois with me so I could go to college, and now we're going on a year and two months of us being together. :]
