What's a good first date activity? - from Em and Lo

Contributor: Em & Lo Em & Lo
We wrote a post on EMandLO.com this week about how to plan a first date -- and an alert reader noted that we said a lot more about what NOT to do than about what to do. (No long dinners, nothing that requires a bathing suit, etc.) The only thing we could come up with is a bar with a pool table or darts board (e.g. some kind of activity that takes the pressure of conversation) or a quiet, local, music concert (that you can kind of talk over). Not exactly creative, we know. So.... any more creative ideas for a great first date? With the rule being, of course, that should keep it kind of simple so you don't come across as some manic cruise director...

I've always thought mini-golf, go-karts, driving ranges, and arcade type places are great first dates. It knocks the edge off because both people are invited to loosen up and be kids again while giving room for good natured ribbing and fun.

Of course, there are people who would think mini golfing is a horrible idea for a date but those people are probably on the stuffy side and think sipping brandy in snifters and discussing the latest cigar rolling techniques is an epic Saturday night.

Going to the planetarium is, in my opinion a fantastic first date!

Going to a club to hear a new band. Bookstore with a coffee counter. Biking. Hiking. Local festival. Carnival. Brunch (casual and no end-of-evening awkward questions).

Going out for something casual like a coffee or a beer is a great first date. It's great because it's possible to upscale, like going to a fancy cafe or pub that serves imports, plus your not roped into an entire meal and hefty bill if things don't go well.

I'd definitely have to second this.
