What does "hooking up" mean to you?

Contributor: Sera Sera
I've thought of "hooking up" in different ways. Sex, dates, talking. What do you think it means personally?

I've mostly heard/ used it in two different ways: making out and having sex. Maybe it's where I'm from, but most people I know don't use 'do you want to hook up tonight?' as 'do you want to hang out tonight?' I'm used to it being used sexually.

I just think of having sex when I hear hooking up. That's my opinion.

I've heard it mostly used sexually, but I've also heard a guy tell his male friends "let's hook up later" and I'm sure they just meant meet up.

sex with no strings attached, or booty call.

I tend to see it as putting two people together to start them dating, or to hang out. I never heard it referred to by my friends as a booty call.

When I hear that someone 'hooked up' with someone else... I always assume that means sex stuff.

I forgot to add, I know some people that when they say they "got the hook up" they're meaning they have connections that got them usually illegal drugs. But again, I've not heard it used sexually.

to me, hooking up is basically just meeting up with a friend or acquaintance for the sole purpose of having sex, with the possibility of maybe going out for dinner afterwards. Generally though its no strings attached style sex for the sake of sex without any kind of emotional connection

I'm the same here but I know that other people use it in this way

When I was in middle school it meant making out... unless I was misunderstanding it.

Now, as an adult, it definitely means some sort of sexual relations taking place.

If someone asked me if I wanted to hook up as in hang out with them I would be somewhat taken aback.

Either making out or sex.

In my circle, it always simply meant "going out". While I thought of another very possible meaning to the phrase, dating was all it was to me. That understanding created an extremely awkward situation--I think while I was still in high school, my mom asked how a certain friend was doing and I said that he had hooked up with so-and-so and she looked shocked by what I said. My mom is the prudest prude of all prudes (didn't get a sex talk from her) and she had me explain what I meant and then she relaxed a little. I realized I had said the wrong thing and was very careful with that phrase from then on...

I kinda find it funny that I'm one of the few who doesn't see it as being sexual or never heard it that way. I wonder if area has something to do with it? Like state-wise? No idea, but it's kinda interesting.

It always meant meeting up as in "So and So and I are hooking up later". I have heard the popular references to sex and drugs and heard it used that way. Seems that soon it'll have as many meanings as Dude!

The way I've heard it used the meaning is sometimes ambiguous. My college age son says it means meeting for sex.

That is what I'm wondering--if certain meanings are stronger in certain areas. I'm in the Southeast U.S., in a particular region with a lot of sexless nerds.

Hook up to me and my friends means to have sex unless the couple is the same gender, then it only means to kiss and hug and all that unless elaborated on.

I don't see a single meaning - it's about context. If my sons says her hooking up with friends - well the meaning is the guys having fun. But when he's hooking up with the girl friend, I'm pretty sure I know what that means.

Language is nuanced - I like it that way.
