A reader wrote into EMandLO.com to ask us this question. So, what do you think? Is it once in a blue moon? Rarer than that? Or actually more common these days, as old-fashioned dating is replaced by something more, er, modern? (See what the EMandLO.com readers had to say here.)

My current boyfriend and I were f-buddies in the beginning. It developed into a relationship pretty fast, and we've been together almost a year now. <3

I never had an f-buddy become a boyfriend. Starting off with sex as opposed to a relationship set the groundwork- there were no set "rules" to follow that usually come with regular relationships. And the main focus of the time together was purely sexual. Having feelings evolve was always one-sided, either they did and I did not or I did and they didn't. The relationship wasn't based on anything substantial so nothing substantial ever came of it. It was what it was.

My husband and I were f-buddies for a month before we started dating. Then we married at our 1 year anniversary and we will be together coming up 8 years
