Should prostitution be legalized in the United States?

Yes it should be, people are doing it anyway. It should be governed though where the prostitutes must be tested regularly and make it safer.

Its not something that I would do, but I don't see why we couldn't have a designated red light district. Germany does a pretty good job with this. They don't actually test the prositutes, but they did do a study on them. The finding were shocking to me. 2% of the prostitutes had STD's, which was significantly lower than the rest of the German population. There sex workers even get insurance and can draw a retirement with enough years in the business. I don't know everything about it, and I'm sure there are bad points to it, but it appears to be better than what happens here in the states with cheap hookers on the streets. I went to a tourist area of Seatle(Pike Market) and when it was getting close to dusk, it became prostitute central. There weres still many families with kids still walking that area of town. At least if there was a red light district, you wouldn't take your kids there.

Probs. I also think that the obscenity laws need to be changed in this country. Anyone in the amateur porn industry is in danger of getting arrested because it's only legal to wholesale distribute porn/adult products (aka, like on clips4sale) in certain states...

Like the Kimberly Kupps case. It really pisses me off. What happens behind closed doors is no one else's fucking business

Prostitution is legal is several southeast Asian and Asian countries. In most of them and especially in Thailand, it is strictly regulated, and controlled. The prostitutes are issued licenses and are expected to submit to routine physical exams. Failure to obtain an exam at the proper time can result in the loss of their license, which means they can't "practice" until they have their exam. Frequent violation can cause permanent loss of their license, and possible jail time.
While this might not be the best solution for the States, it is a model that does work in other areas of the world.

I dont agree with perse street hookers, but like escort type strippers and working out of a brothell i see no reason why not. Street hookers are more likely to be druggies and killed for they're money.

Whether it is legal or illegal, prostitution has too many ill effects and not enough benefits.

By the way, how safe would any of you actually feel if prostitution was legal? Last time I checked governed businesses tend to make faulty products that endanger us all every year. If it's not the food being recalled, it's the medicine, the car, tools, gadgets and toys. We had to wait for a woman to crash her Prius before there was a nationwide recall. A bunch of pets had to die to prove that their food was not up to code. Are we going to have to wait for a wide spread of syphilis, herpes, or HIV to shut down a whorehouse or revoke a hooker's license? Those of you who think that the government would make prostitution safer have a false sense of security.

Also, there are already enough crappy neighborhoods without cheap brothels. Setting up a red light district isn't going to make things prettier.

We pay to watch sex so why can't we pay to have sex? But its a risky business.

i meant that prostitution should be legal in the US. it would save the lives of so many prostitutes and johns. i don't understand the moral thing; it happens regardless of laws placed against it. it just makes sex workers and their clients go to the police and have justice done if they are ripped off or if something like a violent crime happened against them

I Think so yes it would be safer for the girls if it was legal and we put up places for them and had body guards, this would get raid of pimps. Of course they would have to be std screened like porn stars and these places would have to be government regulated but yes this would stop a lot of women from getting in the car with the next serial killer and going missing for no one to care where or what happened to her!

Bugger it, sure, why not? Take the right precautions and legalise it in a major city and see what happens. I'd be curious.

I think it should be legalized, but I also believe it would need to be regulated, taxed and have certain rules and what not.

I think making it legal would be good, providing there was much regulation to make sure everything was consensual. If it were legal, I think I'd support keeping it off the streets, like strip clubs. But honestly, I think it'd be easier to stop sex trafficking if consensual prostitution was legal, if there was any effect at all. Honestly, if someone can be a stripper, a porn star, or even a cam model (personal and one-on-one, just over wires instead of in real life), why make prostitution so much more taboo?

Im on the fence about it.
If the participants were all tested and the facilities were regulated by the government then yes.
But just because something is legal doesnt mean that it wont be abused by people and that terrible things wont happen.
Anything could happen anywhere and anytime. There are pros and cons but ultimately it is about safety for all participants.

Prostitution is Legal in Nevada just not inside of Las Vegas city limits. As long as it is not forced and the workers are kept tested for std's I dont see why it should be illegal.

I can sell my body and mind to an employer for 8 hours per day to do their general labor. I think everyone does this at one point of their lives, if you want to eat or live in a house. Why can't I sell my body (if I chose to) to a man for sexual favors? I can sell everything else I own. I think it should be carefully regulated and safe for ADULTS over the age of 21, not 18. I also think that pimps, madams, etc. should not be part of the legalization, that if someone wants to be a part of that lifestyle, it should be individualized in safe houses or areas. Maybe I am naive and idealistic, but that is how I feel about this issue.

I mean the fact that you'd be "buying" someone it'd be wrong but it's only the sex you're buying so sure

Honestly, I can't think of a reason why it shouldn't be legal. You're allowed to charge for just about any other physical service, from helping with household chores to massage, so sex really shouldn't be excluded from that. This is, of course, assuming that sex workers were regularly checked up on to make sure they were indeed consenting adults.

Plus if it were legal and regulated, so that prostitutes had better access to safe and clean environments, disease testing and health care, it might become easier to catch sexual illnesses before they spread.

I think it should be legalized, so long as there are strict rules that are adhered to. Making sure the sex-workers are tested regularly, perhaps a license to be a sex-worker in the first place. People are going to do it anyway, so why not make it safer, not only from STI/STDs, but also helping with human trafficking.

This summer I visited Amsterdam and took a walk around the Red Light District, which was an interesting experience. I believe that as long as there are specific guidelines that prevent kidnap and other bad things from happening, along with having the prostitutes be regularly tested, that it would be okay. Also, the taxing thing.

I'm not sure which I should vote for. So I picked other.

I agree that prostitution should be legal. There would be less problems in my thinking if it was legal. No more pimps beating there prostitutes for dumb ass reasons. No more arresting, save time for the court system, save time for the police, save us tax payers $$$$$$$$$$$$.

However I would say they should be checked for std's. We don't need anymore ppl getting Std's in this country. It's a life long sentance to server for a half hour of fun. If you have an Std then you shouldn't be doing business. If you have one and conduct business then you should be locked up.

We as a society do need to protect all children from the sick and twisted people in the world that rape and tourture children. It haunts these kids for the rest of there life. Thats just wrong.

I had a boss that you to tell me "No matter how you look at it you pay for sex one way or another. You either pay cash up front or take em to dinner and a movie." I never got him to admit what he thought was easier!

This is just my opinion. I hope I did't affend anyone.

It would be all around better for everyone if it was. They could tax it. They would be able to get the girls and clients screened for diseases. Stop pimps and madams from making the girls addicts. Stop the girls from getting beat up on a regular basis or from disappearing because they got into the car with the wrong person.

No matter what there is still going to be a problem with human trafficking. There will always be a demand for sex slaves and children. Not saying this is at all right, but is the truth. They are never going to say it is okay to prostitute child(because it is not) and there is still always going to be people out there who want that. Same applies to sex slaves. Law enforcement would have to work harder on regulation and try to find these people and shut them down. However it will most likely never go away.

I really think that it is ridiculous that they spend tax payers money on doing whole stings to just bring in Johns and the prostitutes. Really go find something better to do. Make more to catch a predator and move on. Let adults do what they want, unless it is not consensual.

It would be so much safer for everyone if it was regulated. I always love bringing up the show Firefly because it has a prime example of what an amazing thing this could. Prostitution has become regulated at it keeps all people safe by blacklisting those who would hurt a sex worker and by providing complete medical care and shelter for the worker so that disease and health concerns are not rampant. It is a win-win for everyone and is ultimately dependent on choice. Choice to be a sex worker and choice to engage with one safely.
