I suppose it'd be fine. Though as with anything I'm leery about regulation.
Should prostitution be legalized and regulated?
11/07/2012
I definitely think that it should be!

For the protection of the women, absolutely.

The simple fact is, in countries where it is legal and regulated you see a lot less sexual exploitation of women. Even in America we have lots of young girls forced into prostitution against their will. In countries where it is legal (and regulated of course) you see the majority of prostitutes entering the business of their own free will, not out of fear or desperation. For that reason alone it should be legal.

And the lessened std risks when prostitutes are legally required to be tested and display the results of those tests. The opposite of what we have in America where prostitutes are often afraid to go and get tested because they fear being reported to police.
12/14/2012
I think it should be legal, regulated, and the workers should have very good health insurance.
12/16/2012
It's a hard question, but ultimately, yes
12/28/2012
The way I look at is we own our own bodies, and what other people want to do with theirs is none of my business and visa versa
01/02/2013
it's a job. tax 'em like we're taxed. I don't see anything wrong with prostitution, and I totally believe it should be legalized.

It's extremely hypocritical for politicians in Washington to decry prostitution as a valid service when they themselves use our tax money via their salary for the same services. less

The danger lies in its being unregulated, hidden and exploiting people who don't want to continue or never wanted to in the first place.
01/30/2013
I'm in favor of the nordic model: Prostitutes themselves are de-criminalized but pimps and johns are still arrested.
01/30/2013
I do think it should be legalized and regulated. It would make it so much safer and women in trouble would be much more likely to seek help if it were decriminalized.
01/30/2013
Do our federal/state/local law enforcement agencies really have the funds to be spending extra resources on being the sex police for consensual activities between legal adults? Why don't we spend our resources on going after child molesters, or people that sell illegal guns which are then used to shoot up schools? You know...crimes that actually HURT people!

The government proved during the Civil War that legalizing prostitution promoted safer sex practices, kept the ladies and gents safer, and dropped the level of STDs contracted to near negligible levels. So many people believe that the war was both won and lost because of starvation but the sad truth is that syphilis and gonorrhea claimed many more lives than starvation...and at one point more than bullets!
When the government stepped in and forced bawdy houses to promote condom use and doctor visits for both the prostitutes AND the paying customers the STD rate plummeted. The prostitutes were no longer badly treated by their Madames and the wages they earned were regulated by the government...and medical care came out of their checks (so to speak). The prostitutes were happy with the arrangement, the Madames were happy as were local townsfolk. The Temperance Society, however, was not and after the war forced prostitution to be criminalized regardless of the lessons learned.
Things went back to the way they were before the government stepped in and regulated everything. So yeah I am all for decriminalization and regulation. Let's put the sex trade slavers out of business...make it a real career, and get some sanity. If we can't put the bastards out of business then we can hurt them really badly while protecting the people who wish to sell and those who wish to buy. less

Prostitution should be legal and regulated the way it is in Nevada afterall who the hell is the Gov to tell consenting adults what they can and cannot do? If two people are willing to make an arrangement for sex whether it involves money or otherwise its their business not the Govs.

Hell no. Making prostitution legal is the same as saying human trafficking is ok. I disagree. There are problems already with people not going to get tested regularly and those people sometimes carry disease anyways to other people. Prostitution will not change that, nor should paying someone to have sex with you. It would bring a whole new problem to light: Should you buy a human being under any circumstance? For me, by saying yes it would be no different than slavery. So no.
* To the user who asked what's the difference between paying for a prostitute and a webcam girl, the difference is 1) Safety and 2) Service in accomplice with government laws. Thank you!

whooo knows.
04/14/2013
Just legalize it. Together with most (if not all the other) "victimless crimes." It is ridiculous that any society should still punish people for private acts that are legal in other countries... even other states.
If nobody gets hurt, nobody complains, nobody's damaged, then what's the problem?

There is a big difference between voluntary prostitution/escorting and human sex trafficking. It's all about consent. Following your reasoning, you could also say that making employment legal is the same as saying forced labor is okay. Do you see what I mean? The fact that people are sometimes forced into doing something doesn't mean that people who choose to do that thing, voluntarily, who are good at it and want to earn a living doing it, should be prevented by law from doing so.

Selling sexual services is not the same as selling a human being. If it were, then paying someone for a massage or any other physical service would also be "buy[ing] a human being."

Following my example I state the following which I will provide research for at a later time: The same as the webcam girl, that person is providing a risk free service. Prostitutes are in danger when they provide a service. Prostitues do provide a service for another person outside of themselves i.e a pimp. I beg you to find the nearest prostitute and ask him/ her if they actually wake up in the morning satisfied with their career choice. Ask them how many times do they (realistically) "consent" to having sex and listen carefully to the answers. Just because you take off your clothes and lay down to have sex DOES NOT mean you consent to it. The act is soley for the money.
Until you have spoken to several prostitutes and record the answers, take on the career, or do some research too it would almost be impossible to claim that prostitution is consentual. Besides, the main reason that prostitution is illegal isn't just for the risk factors. It is illegal because the money from prostitution usually doesn't go to the prostitute (the person providing the service) directly, but rather a "master" source which is similar to slavery.
And if being legal was the case, the prostitutes would work in an industry that has moniteration of the service that follows the law, such as being an escort or a webcam girl/guy.
Thank you for the response.

Legalize it...along with a few other things, and we could all watch our national debt go away.

I can't share how, but I can assure you that I do have definite knowledge that there are (at least) a large number of women, and at least a few men, who choose to sell sexual services, choose their own clients, and don't work for a "manager" or pimp. The main danger such people are in is that of being arrested and punished for a victimless crime. However, as I've mentioned before, legalizing this work would provide additional safety for sex workers, because they'd no longer need to fear being punished themselves if they report a crime against them.

I disagree with your definition of consent, as well. Performing a sexual act for pay, rather than solely for pleasure, does not make it non-consensual.
And as for a sex worker being in danger when s/he provides the service for which s/he is being paid, you could say the same for any professional who meets with clients in private locations. You wouldn't argue in favor of outlawing the careers of plumbers and electricians because they're in danger when they go to a client's home, right?
