Do you believe abstinence only education REALLY works?

Scaring kids doesn't work. The more you tell teenagers to do something, the more they're going to want to do it. Hell, I have friends who are now 20 years old and on pregnancy number 2(but still in basically the same position they were the last time: no serious relationship, no job, no education) because even going through it once didn't convince them.

Nerp.
People will do what they want, regardless. They should be taught how to be safe, not The Mean Girls way.

Unfortunately, unless the government takes parental rights away from those who would prefer that their children remain ignorant, that is exactly what will occur.

I think it's important to be honest and open with kids. Talk about the benefits of waiting, talk about how to avoid pregnancy/STDs if you don't.

I know some people who feel differently, but I really believe that we need to be open and honest in our sex education. And modern--don't forget modern. Adults will never be "cool" in a kid's world, but nothing is more terrifying than watching your elementary school nurse shove her fingers into a semi-sheer plastic vagina to demonstrate female anatomy. Abstinence-only education doesn't work any more than making the legal drinking age 21: some people will never do it, but most people will (drink before 21/have sex in high school). Kids should understand the risks and complications that come with sex, but also the pleasure and different mindsets that different people have about sex. Teachers and parents should discuss the fact that while some people look at sex simply as an act of pleasure, others look at it as a life-changing bond that should only be shared with one person. The discussions need to be had and kids need to be able to step up and make educated choices about sex for themselves.

The way I see it is that teens who want to have sex will have sex whether they're told to wait or not. I'd rather they just know how to make informed choices and stay safe.

Teaching 'don't have sex until marriage' as if it were the simple solution to something as complex as sex is asking for trouble in my opinion.

considering some people think that vaginas are endless tunnels that lead to nowhere, you can get pregnant by giving a blow job, and you wont get pregnant if you have sex in a hot tub... abstinence education is a big fat lie.

Safe sex education needs to be taught now more than ever because the increase in STD's. It may not prevent sex or pregnancy, BUT it will protect their saftey

No, abstinence only doesn't work. Comprehensive and inclusive (not heteronormative) sex ed is what's needed.

I think they need to teach all options and tell them the honest truth. Best percentage for not getting knocked up or a STD would be of course abstinence and self pleasure. BUT if they want to be sexually active (and I think trying to teach them and make them comfortable with deciding if they do or not and not giving into peer pressure is another thing they should try to teach them) teach them how to protect themselves and how and where they can get that protection. Plus HOW to use that protection (most adults don't even know how to use a condom properly). They should teach them about pregnancy and STD's.

No! I read about Coke douches - adults in an educational role encouraging ignorance is deplorable. I say, teach everything - educate kids - and let them decide.

We know abstinence only education doesn't work. We know that because states that teach that way have higher rates of teen pregnancy and stds. Teenagers will have sex. There is nothing that can be done about that. It is a completely normal part of life. But if they don't know how to do it safely then they will do it unsafely.

Teenagers need to know not only what birth control methods are available but how to use them to achieve the highest effectiveness.

Abstinence only programs don't work. The best way to go is to educate people about sex so they know what decisions to make that are safe and responsible.

It's just not an actual solution. Lots of things don't or can't happen if you don't do them. But you would never say 'don't drive, then you won't get in a car accident' and call that a good transportation plan.

I support really liberal sex ed in which there are real discussions of pleasure, masturbation for male and female assigned people, contraception, STIs, and queer people.

i say no. we should really be teaching how much it changes your life if you get pregnant also I think we should be teaching how birth control works and where to get it. Teaching std's could also be a big part about it.

No, it doesn't, and if you go to ANY high school where abstinence is taught, there's much higher pregnancy and STI/STD rates. It's really obvious that it doesn't work, and sex is completely natural and healthy, there's no reason to teach against it.
