Really it depends on the show. The first time I was exposed to a lesbian couple in a show was in Buffy the Vampire Slayer when Willow met Tara. They were a beautiful couple and made me feel stronger as a bisexual woman and more confident in myself.

Sometimes, though, it is all about stereotype and it's obvious that it is acting, because they do so poorly at it.

I don't bother looking at how the media portrays anyone, so not sure why I'd focus on lesbians. It's selling a simplified view, so I'd much rather judge by people I've gotten to know and talk to.

I don't watch a lot of tv, but I think they're usually portrayed pretty okay, myself when I do see them.

I think it's not so much HOW they're portrayed in the media, but how little they are portrayed. It's more and more common to have a gay male couple portrayed on tv, but it's still once in a blue moon I see a lesbian couple on a television show or something similar.

I thought Buffy did a wonderful job with Willow and Tara, and Warehouse 13 is doing a nice job with the whole Bering and Wells thing, as well as Jinx, of course. I loved the reveals for Jinx and for Helena, both seemed very realistic, plot-relevant, and non-sensational -- just a part of continued characterization, without a fuss.

There are some shows that do a horrible job with stereotypes and overblown 'very special episode' type crap -- but those aren't shows I'd watch, for the most part.

I have to agree with you on this one, and most media lesbian couples aren't particularly well known I can name a few.
