When I saw that Ron Jeremy had surgery for a heart aneurysm this morning, it got me thinking about the Golden Age of Porn. I only became aware of adult films towards the end of that era, but to this day, I think there was something special about the stars and films of that time which is missing today.
So...who's your favorite female porn star from the "Golden Age"? Your favorite male star? Your favorite film? And finally, what do you think made that era so special (if you agree with me that it was special)?
Who are your favorite "Golden Age" female & male porn stars and films?

Nina Hartley

I voted for Nina Hartley, too, not just because she's an awesome person and is actually an Edenite herself--but also because of the awesome energy and intelligence she put into every scene.
It wasn't an easy choice. Marilyn Chambers had a truly special charisma and Seka was unbelievably sexy. And I've always loved Little Oral Annie!

I was a big fan of Ginger Lynn and Taija Rae - although they may fall out of the range you're looking for

Even though I rarely watch hetero porn, everything (non-porn) I've seen and read of Nina Hartley makes me admire her.

Definitely have to go with Peter North on this one. He started out doing gay films under the name "Matt Ramsey." Even then, he was known for his prowess as a power-ejaculator.

I debated whether to even include him, since his career only started as the "Golden Age" was ending. Another one I could have included was Tom Byron, always a favorite of mine.

That's a tough one. I like Beyond the Green Door, but I still watch Cafe Flesh on occasion.

What made the Golden Age of Porn special, in a way the modern adult film industry is not? Or do you disagree that it WAS special?

Just the newness of it...
02/01/2013
I think the newness was definitely part of it. And the fact that it was viewed as something almost forbidden. It took some effort just to see porn at all in those days, which made it seem more important and special. I only knew a couple of families with VCRs and the one video store in my town didn't have any XXX anyway. I actually saw my first adult film (I Like to Watch) at a theater! Drove 50 miles to the big bad city just for that right after I got my first car.
Also making it special to me is that almost all adult films were shot on film until the mid 80s. That gave them a "distance" video lacks, making the films seem more substantial.
Most of all, there was a different aura about the stars then. They seemed mysterious and exotic (not to mention erotic, of course. ) I think some of that also came from the work being shot on film. But some of it came from the stars themselves. They were bold people and it showed in their work. They weren't following a well-blazed trail like today's stars; they were hacking out a path through the wilderness. I'm very glad they did!

Porn from that era had a less "mass produced" feel. Once VCRs became so commonplace and people started buying their own porn, a lot of the stuff that was produced (and still is) was cheap-looking and boring. And the older stuff has a kitschy quality to it, especially when they are trying to act.
