A post about a bad experience someone had in an adult novelty store received a lot of responses from people who work in such stores, including myself. Do you work in a sex shop/adult novelty store? If so, is it the stereotypical dimly lit, creepy, dusty, kind of place? Or classy and up-scale? Interesting stories encouraged!!

I have not, but I am not opposed to it and have considered it. I had friends who worked at Starship, and I wanted to apply for a part-time position in the evening. They were only accepting applications on certain days and at certain times, which conflicted with my day job, so I couldn't make it down there.
My friends never had any interesting stories and there were no booths or anything like that, but they do sell pipes. But, hell even the gas stations sell pipes here. They keep them in pretty glass display cases and tell shocked customers that it's glass art.

"Glass art"? I like that. We obviously push the issue that they are for legal tobacco only and if someone so much as mentions an illegal substance or calls a water pipe a bong, we kick them out.

The rules are the same everywhere. I watched someone get kicked out for asking for a cleansing product to pass a drug test. Shops like this are pretty much everywhere around here these days and sometimes in some of the strangest places. Or at least places where you wouldn't expect to find a head shop, that is. It's comical. I haven't been inside of one in years, the selections were a little on the skeevy side sometimes and seemed to be more a random ordering of things instead of stocking to demand. Then I found Eden and I haven't looked back.

Oh wait! There was this one girl I worked with---she was telling me how she had to keep replastering the walls of the booths every night, because guys would go in there for oral adventures.
There's also a law here that states the floor must be of non-porous materials for sanitation purposes. Just goes to show you how backwards it is here; there's a law to keep it clean, but we still can't buy beer on Sunday.

I do not, but I would love to as a side job!!!

I work in an adult shop and I love it It's quite upscale and we rarely get the sketchy folk coming in.
08/19/2011
I'd be in BIG trouble if I worked in an adult store. It would certainly be an awesome job, but I'd never take home any actual cash. Unfortunately toys don't pay the bills.....hehehe.

I would not want to, at least not here. They are all dirty and dark. dont think I would enjoy the customers that would be coming in.

I wouldn't mind working at one of those nice adult superstores, such as the Lion's Den. At least I know enough about adult products that I could actually be helpful to customers. I don't have any hangups about talking about sexual matters either.
When it comes to glass pipes and such, the laws confuse me. Stores selling "for tobacco use", but what would happen if, say, you were pulled over by a cop and a pipe was in your car? Would you be charged with drug paraphernalia even though you purchased it legally and were actually using it for tobacco? The situation doesn't make sense to me.

Could be fun to work in one if it felt more classy and all luxury toys. The one here seems to attract more sleezy guys or just those looking for cheap bachelor/bachelorette gag gifts.

I actually just applied at one last week. Fingers crossed I get the job!

I cannot explain how much I love my job!
It's what brought me here in the first place, so I'm thankful for it in that way. I really don't know how I lived without this site.
Overall, my job is the best job I've ever had. I get paid a nice amount to sit in a store by myself with my laptop doing homework, poking around on here, and exploring the internet. I've knitted things up there, played my Nintendo DS, read books . . . it's probably the most relaxing job out there.
Sometimes I do get those creepy customers, but our store doesn't attract the super creeps. We're really upscale. I do get the occasional customer looking for a viewing booth, but we don't have those. We do sell "tobacco pipes", so we do get a lot of people coming in for those. Most of the time, I really enjoy the customers I get. I really love the people who come in and ask me questions or want my help in finding their first toy or something to spice up their marriage.
Oh, and of course I have some pretty silly stories and I do come across odd things on a daily basis. Just like I tell my customers . . . there's nothing they can tell me that I haven't heard before.

I would work at one as a second job.

Never have and more than likely never would.

I want to though!!!! I want to own my own!

I applied for and was a good candidate for an asst manager job as a lingerie/sex toy store close to our house. (Nursing hours and on my feet for 12-18 shifts if no longer possible for me.) I know I was qualified for the job, and think perhaps my age has something to do with my not getting hired.
All the workers and the managers were in their late teens and early 20s. IMO, someone a bit older with a lot of world experience would have been an asset to the store. But, I guess they had their "Youth is Might" idea and someone over 30 wasn't to be trusted... or hired.
I did work in a record store/head shop when I was in High School through the beginning college. It got too hard with University, and being away, plus the home work required. It was fun, though. We had an incredible head shop in the store.

Yeah, most of us (other than the owners and district manager) are in our late teens and early twenties. I'm only 23 and a couple of weeks ago I told the owner, "I'm so tired of these 18-year-olds!" And she agreed with me lol. I'm sorry you didn't get hired and I'm especially sorry if it had something to do with your age. I wouldn't at all mind having someone a little older in the store. We have a pretty good staff but every once in a while you get a flaky little young person (like I used to be).

Really, it's just me and the boss who work here. I've been here for four months and I've been bumped up from 20-40 hours a week, I'm here more than the manager, I do ordering and all that. I'm basically an assistant manager. I was also told that when the manager leaves the store, that he'll pass the job onto me.
It's awesome to have a job where I get paid to hang out and spend time on Eden or doing my homework. Super relaxing.

Yeah I do enjoy spending so much time on Eden while at work, but it's technically against the rules to sit on the computer like this. And Eden is starting to get depressing for me, it just reminds me of how crappy my sex life is.

Never realized it could or would be my career choice, but I jumped at the chance when I saw it. And I couldn't be happier.

I've wanted to but I'm an education major and am worried it would affect my future. Some employers would frown on a teacher who worked in a sex shop. Sad.
