WOW...how do you feel about this one?

Contributor: Bignuf Bignuf
Just heard a new story (very valid source, but not a generally available news outlet) about a brother and sister, now in late 30's. They are BOTH once married and divorced (no kids, thankfully, I think), and THEY have just petitioned a state court for a special permission to get married!!! Seems they have admitted now to having played "I'll show you mine if you show me yours", since they were about four years of age, and by their teen years, they were having several night a week relations. They went to the same college and somehow arranged to be room-mates (bed-mates) for the whole four years. The consciously decided to separate and find "real" partners after college...which they did, with total failure. Now they have been "back together" for four years and want to get legally married!

How do you feel about THAT arrangement. With other "non traditional" marriage on the books more and more, is it for any of us to say "NO"? Is it just "crazy" to consider saying "yes"?????

They did say they will "NOT have children" (at least not of their own making), so they too realize the reproductive risk involved, but they say "love is love and they cannot help it".

SO...what do you think?

Honestly, as long as they don't try to have children together I don't have any issue with it. I'd never do something like that, because as much as I love my siblings, I don't love them like that, but I have no problem with other people doing this.

Incest is illegal. It's doubtful they can get the state to OK their marriage.

There was a case a number of years ago where a brother and sister had been separated as children and met later and got married. They had a few kids, who were healthy. When they found out they were related, the state allowed to stay married, but one of them had to be sterilized. At least that's how I remember it. It's pretty hard to force someone into sterilization, but it's also nearly impossible to have an incestual relationship legalized.

I just think it's disgusting to be honest. I don't agree with any type of incest. At all. Period.
There is NO way they will be able to do it, no one is going to approve that. And IF that should ever be legal, well they damn well better approve gay marriage in EVERY state!!! Atleast being gay isn't illegal.
I'll just stop there before I end up offending someone.

The thing is that homosexuality isn't illegal, so that's on the table right now. Incest and pedophilia are illegal, so the states would be condoning an illegal act for them to get married (and, it's implied, have sex.) I don't really see force-sterilizing siblings because as long as their parents weren't related as well there should be a VERY low chance of them having issues.

But hey, I think that there was someone in Australia trying to marry a dolphin (when bestiality is illegal) so maybe things will change in the next few years with these people actually trying to get it settled legally. Maybe they can just move to Australia and try it there.

I don't think they should try to bring children into that relationship, but if they want to be together, that is none of my concern. I do think it's disgusting, but it's not my place to say what two adults can do with their own bodies. Clearly they want to be together, so they should be allowed to be together. They are adults and can do as they wish. I'm not sure if I think they should get married, but if the state allows it, then that's fine by me.

I honestly don't particularly like it, but I don't care as long as they aren't negatively impacting children. I would prefer if there were no kids involved ever, but I can't be too critical because I have a very non-traditional relationship that I intend to be long term.

They can do what they like, I don't think the state should be required to authorize it, though.

As far as I know (although it probably varies state by state) there are ways that domestic partners (like spinster sisters who share a house) can have some of the legal protections that marriage provides (at least healthcare rights, probably some tax stuff too.) This couple should probably pursue that, since it's more likely to be feasible than marriage.

By definition in many, many states homosexuality is illegal. It's classified as sodomy.

They are two consenting adults, and they don't intend to bring kids into it. It's not something I'm personally into, but who am I to condemn them? It's none of my business, and they aren't hurting anyone.

My opinion is: who cares? The United States government needs to pull its head out of its ass and its laws out of our bedrooms. Are minors involved in the sexual activity? No. Are animals involved? No. Is anyone doing anything against their will? No.

My anger comes from a long list of issues I have with any government body or religion dictating who people can have sex with and how. I'm not going to run out and hop in bed with my family, but if people have been able to figure out that dynamic without emotionally scarring everyone involved, then what business is it of mine? Or, anyone else's for that matter.

Wow...that is quite a story. The thing is, it probably isn't so unusual, historically speaking, or even today in some parts of the world. As they are adults and don't plan to bring children into it, I would be inclined to say...go ahead. We don't get to choose who we fall in love with, and sometimes, it can be inconvenient. This is just a lot more inconvenient than usual. But they are not hurting anybody, so why not?

I can imagine how the "good people" in their town will treat them if they are allowed to pursue this marriage though. It would probably be best for them to move to a new city where they could be more anonymous.

It's not something that I would choose, so who am I to judge? It has nothing to do with me...so it doesn't matter in my mind.

I think it's gross, but as long as they don't have any children together I don't think it's a big deal.

Its what ever to me but I agree that they should have stayed out of the public eye with this... life may get difficult for them if this story gets media coverage

I'd have an issue with it, if only because we don't know the story behind it. Were they exposed to sexual situations at an inappropriate age that normalized the idea of sexual relations between family? Did the brother groom and coerce the sister into doing sex acts with him growing up, or vice versa? Love is love, sure, but there's something unusual about siblings exploring each other to that sexual a degree.

It's not up to us to analyze them or tell them what to do, really, but there's still reasons you aren't allowed to engage in incest, and normalizing that to any extent makes me feel a bit icked out.

As someone said earlier, "Incest is illegal. It's doubtful they can get the state to OK their marriage."

But to your point about government intrusion or to get our laws out of our bedroom, I complete agree with you. What needs to be done is that (WE) the people need to change our representatives in order to change these laws; until that happens, the laws have to be enforced! We are a country of LAWS! Nothing more, nothing less.

If they want to be together, it is none of my business. I don't think it is healthy though. I don't think they can expect the state to allow them to marry when infest illegal.
