Would you euthanize your pet?

Contributor: Dixiemomma Dixiemomma
yes... if theres no other option.... i had to put down my beloved dog of 15 years last christmas after she developed a large tumor on her chest, she got to where she was unable to walk on her own, she was rapidly losing weight and the vet said even if we removed it that it was too close to her heart, she'd only live maybe another couple of months. Instead of putting her through that i made the decision to put her down.... i brought her home and buried her in our yard so she could be with us forever i miss my girl terribly, she was with me through my entire adult life, thru 2 marriages and a child and a cross country move..... She'll always be my best friend.

If there is a chance to heal them, then no. However, we had a dog that was 18 years old, she was blind, had severe arthritis, and had stopped making an effort to eat even if the bowl was right near her. As much as I loved her it was better to let her go.

I've had to do it with a few animals. It's hard to do, but if they are suffering, it's selfish to keep them alive.

I haven't had to do this yet as my pets are not that very old, but I would think if they were terminally ill and were in pain.

If they're suffering, then it's the best thing. Best is rarely the easiest.

I would simply because knowing an animal was in pain in any way I could not stomach it. I have put down several of my pets in the past because they were getting so old that they wouldn't be happy any more.

Yes, when they are in pain and there's no other way to save them.

This is hard for me. I have a 15 year old dog and I can't imagine killing her. At the same time if I know she is suffering and its more pain than happiness I would be selfish to not do it.

Yes, It's sad to watch a pet in pain. As much as it's sad to euthanize, it's better for them.

I have, and I would. I believe in quality of life, not quantity of life. I love my pets too much to let them suffer. When they start to refuse food or water, it's time to let them go.

I have not had to euthanize a pet, but I would if I had a pet who was suffering and there was nothing I could do.

Yep, we put my dog down when she was in pain and unable to get up anymore. It was one of the toughest things I've had to do, but it stopped her from suffering

Sadly, yes I would even though it would kill me but it would only be if my dog had NO chance of getting better. It would kill me though as she is my baby I plan to have her cremated and put in a memory box when he time comes to go to doggy heaven. I prefer not to think about it though.

Since we live in town, I'm not able to discharge a firearm in city limits. Although going to the vet can be stressful and confusing for many pets, it's the next best thing.

I'm the type that tries to do CPR if my pet stops breathing but I wouldn't be doing that if my pet was too ill, hurting, or too old. I would go ahead and let them go in that case and cry my heart out.

Yes, I would. If they're sleeping all the time and can't move, they are no longer enjoying life, and I feel it's cruel to let them continue to suffer.

I had my seven year old Rottweiler mix euthanized back in November. Simply put, this dog was my life. I still break down and cry over him, I miss him terribly. I don't regret having him put down, however. Cancer took over quickly and he was suffering. Releasing him from his pain was the greatest gift I could give him at that point.

I may have to face putting another pet to sleep soon. I just adopted a Border Collie mix a month and a half after my Rottie passed. She's a sweetheart, just turned two years old. She unfortunately has a lot of medical problems: hip dysplasia, discoid lupus, and I'm still waiting for the test results, but she is suspected to have an untreatable, degenerative neurological disease, too.

I really hate that dogs' lives are so short compared to ours ... What can you do, though, but love them and give them the best life you can while they're here?
