If you could hang out all day at home, never having to go to work in your life ever anymore, would you grow your own food instead of getting it from elsewhere?
Would you...?

Some food, yes, but it would be tough to raise cattle and large game like that!
01/26/2012
I think that would be a challenge.

I used to live on a farm and it was not fun for me at all.

Possibly. I'd be open to it at least. My grandmother had a HUGE garden my whole life until this year. She always spent all of her time in that thing. She loved it and she mostly used food from her garden instead of a store. I actually liked it a lot. I wouldn't get into the work that goes into gardening or farming at all though! I hate sweat, bugs, etc. Yuck. But Id be open to it...

I would love to do this, our apartment is very small without a yard so even if I didn't have both work and school it would be hard to grow a garden. Where I grew up in Southern California we had a great garden and we mostly grew vegetables. We also had a few fruit trees which provided a lot of fruit when they got older.

I would love to stay home all the time and never work! Or maybe write fiction novels or children's books.
Growing my own food would be nice too, but growing and milling grain for bread? Or growing rice? Difficult.
Actually, given the climate here, I'd definitely need a greenhouse. It's a shame it doesn't work like Harvest Moon, where in one of the more recent games you can grow full-sized trees in your basement.

I would love to be that self sufficient. Someday...

I'd love to position myself financially so that I could get by comfortably without having to work full time. I'd also love to have the time to get back to gardening and other neglected hobbies.

Thankfully I am in the position to do that, unfortunately where I live does not allow that. Fortunately, my girlfriend is a bit of a gardener and we plan on planting a much bigger garden this year at her place. Possibly getting some chickens to run around the yard as well, that is, if we can teach her Rottweiler not to eat them!!

Yes this would be awesome, but not practical.

I said I already do that lol. Although it's a small garden, we don't live off of it; we still buy stuff from the store.
It's just nice to grow some fruits and veggies. We also grow pumpkins. We always have mammoth sunflowers every year, they are taller than me. And we grow bird house gourds so we can dry them out and paint them to sell at our handmade store.
All of that grows out side. But inside we are growing an avocado tree. She's too small to go outside yet. She's about the length of my arm now.
Fun!
We also grow cat nip and cat grass for our kitties. They love it. Since they are indoor cats we put up some yummy cat grass every once in a while so they can have some of the outdoors without being outside.
Gardens are for more than just edible’s!

There are deffinately times when I would be happy to be stranded on an island with my wife and kids. I would be happy to get my own food grow or dare I say hunt my food.

I was always a big fan of books like my side of the mountain and life on the missippi. Living off the land would be great.

I feel like it would be a full-time job, but I wouldn't mind it.
Where I live, you can't really grow food year-round unless you have a greenhouse set. That might be cool, though. You have to plan and preserve and can things for the winter.
Honestly, I think the best bet would be a small community so that food-raising could be assigned. Someone has a potato crop, someone has pigs, et cetera. A little of each can be harder to maintain and hectic (when it comes to breeding/keeping number under control/being sure your stock doesn't fail).

At this stage I'm home all day and have been through the whole garden growing thing for a number of years. We even built shade houses so no bugs can eat the vegies. We don't like spraying chemicals all over something we're gonna eat.
It's a big job weeding. I set up pipe work with sprinklers so the watering was easy.
To really do it properly, you need to read up on companion planting, as some vegies just won't produce well when planted next to certain other types. And to get the best out of your produce, you need to rotate the crops so the same vegie isn't raping the same patch of dirt every time you replant.
There's a lot to gardening if you're very serious about getting the most out of it.
We gave up cause I can't be out in the sun for too long, so my gardening hours were short.

Some food, tropical or livestock, you just can't grow or rear yourself though. So, I'd still like to go out for sushi every now and then.

Well yeah, though rabbits can replace the meat supply like a dream, and if you set up an aquaponic system with some fish doing fine in there too!

And hunting is always an alternative, and I feel way finer about killing one large animal only than more, as a large animal will give as much meat as many small ones, only one life to be taken for the same amount... ~smiles a little sad (Hell I donno how in the world I will ever kill any creatures, I can't even slap a mosquito!!! ~sighs)

O/ours will definitely be stuffed with flowers and other pretty precious plants too, O/our H/home is already full of them as well, can barely even move here and there, couldn't even count the plants on my desk!!!

Well I bet, though it also depends on the system you set up...

Many things can be almost fully automatized, that you only have to look at stuff often enough if everything is alright...
W/we personally intend to manage stuff as easy as possible, have a greenhouse and grow things in raised beds instead of anything on the ground, so W/we won't have to bend all the time, have automatic venting and moisture, rocks all over to keep the heat in cold weather, even a stove to give extra warmth... If you are fine not needing special creatures you can pretty much build up an "ecosystem", and that makes life a thousand more times easier!
Other than that you have to get up fuckin early all the all the all the time to feed the critters... Well, sometimes one of you could sleep in, have a weekend I guess... ^^

Yep! I actually have had a garden for that purpose in the past, but I need a yard to keep it in!
01/27/2012
Not for me
01/27/2012
yes
01/27/2012
It really depended.
01/27/2012
I'm open to the idea, so maybe.
01/27/2012
If I had a green thumb, I would
01/27/2012
No, I'm terrible with plants. That would be a good way for me to starve to death. It sounds much more appealing to me to keep doing my current job and to pay for food. I would rather leave the food growing to the professionals!
01/27/2012
nah, i'm way too lazy for that, lol
