What in the world is going on in the vibrators subforum?

Contributor: Elaira Elaira
Anyone else see that there are a million posts from people asking questions about things they could find out on the product page or in the reviews? They're spamming it up in there. I have a feeling this is point farming, as a lot of these are back-to-back from the same person.

I don't know about anyone else, but this irks me somewhat.

I feel the same way. It's been getting worse and worse lately. I've also noticed a lot of people "accidentally" double posting.

I get irked by a lot of the posts where the same person posts either multiple inadequate posts (like they always only put 2 options where there should be at least 10) or post multiple tiny variations on the same topic, when they could easily be combined into a comparative posts. Obvious spam posts are just plain pathetic to me, since it'd be pretty easy to at least do a couple on topics that hold some interest...

Now the whole thing is just cluttered with nonsense. Ugh. So many "how do these work" and "is this good?" threads. That's what the reviews are for.

I can understand asking a few stupid questions (I have myself!) but when they're obviously in it for the points I think that an admin should speak with them! Personally the $0.10 of points isn't worth my reputation and acceptance in this community!

yes, i understand! but petite makes a good point, if there is a lot of excessive spamming, flagging would be a good idea.

I sorta wish that the forum moderators would go through and delete a lot of these spam threads.

I've flagged a lot of threads recently but that doesn't seem to be stopping the persons involved...

Whenever I see someone's made more than two threads in a row that have seemly useless titles, I make a mental note of their name and avoid looking at anything they have to say after that.

I feel slightly abashed now, and wish to explain myself. I've only posted one thread - a comparative one for Wands - which went tits up in the making of it. I could only put up two options for some reason.

Now, spamming aside (which I don't condone) I feel I should defend the flip side of it. Such threads come in handy for me, and others I'm sure, when we can't decide which is the better toy, because they're so alike in said reviews. And for the computer illiterate, like myself, posting such threads can be confusing, and quite tricky .

I don't think you're the person Miss Debauchery and potstickers are talking about - it's all right for you to ask for others opinion when you're undecided amongst two toys. Those spammers Miss D pointed out usually like to post late at night, always posting 2 or 3 threads consecutively asking brief and stupid questions about toys. If you pay attention, you'll also figure out who those spammers are.

Yeah, totally not you. It's usually some short title related to a product saying simply "how good is this?" or "how does this work?"

you can tell when people are asking because they want to know. if you posted a comparative discussion about two toys because you really wanted other opinions on it, you're using the forum correctly and get a million cool points for that. I really get frustrated when people post in the forum instead of taking two seconds to read the product page or a review.

I mean, I post quite a few threads, but usually it is something useful, and I usually go over my point limits in the first couple hours I'm on.

Oh, aye, that's okay. I usually lose my way around here, more often than not, so I wasn't sure.

So that begs the question as to what can be done with spammers? Could a system be implemented where, if you get a certain number of flags in a certain amount of time, you're suspended for a brief period? Ooh! We could also, as forum members and not staff members, have a named and shamed thread of people who spam?

Just thinking out loud here. I mainly just want the cyber police badge!

Definitely not a 'named and shamed' thread! We're trying to keep everything friendly and positive, not appear to be petty and sniping. We do have a system of warnings and suspensions for those who overstep the bounds - Kristi/Zuul takes care of that.

We express our frustration at the abuse of the system because it interferes with our use of it, really. That's what it boils down to for the rest of us.

What I'm wondering is that the 'product spammers' are just looking at the product page, posting on the 'have a question' link on the product page, and going on, without ever looking at the forum. They obviously don't want an answer and aren't interested in learning the rules.

Good God there's no 'named and shamed' thread yet - or else my name will definitely appear on it. I accidentally posted my thread six times yesterday, while all I did was trying to fix some of the words on the original post, man did I get flagged! Thank goodness Kristi helped me removed five of the doubled posts quickly, or else I might be flagged to hell!

ABSOLUTELY NOT! Publically shaming a user is NEVER EVER a good idea. I can't even believe you would be so bold as to suggest such a thing. This is not kindergarten. *regains composure*

Yesterday I posted a poll, one I actually REALLY wanted people to answer. It was about who all on here is a military girlfriend/fiance/wife and I wanted to know because my boyfriend is enlisting now. Right after I posted that there was a whole lot of that spam and my post got pushed to the bottom and no one replied. Really sucked

That's going to happen regardless of the amount of spam posts that occur. It's just the way the forum loads. Feel free to bump important threads to get them back to the top if you really want people to see them. Just leave a comment that says "bump" in the thread.

I am usually over my points limit after about ten minutes! I write down things I need to know, etc. when I think of them and after I log on, I find my list and ask or start a discussion.

I am wondering if some of these people are also bringing their topics back by posting about three months after it was started. Have you noticed this as well? I am not talking about the honest thank you's, but some that say 'I still can't figure out.....'
08/02/2011
Contributor: Elaira Elaira
And it's happening again. Ugh. I swear it's all one person doing the same thing under different usernames because multiple accounts have posted in the same exact way and asked pretty much the same questions.

It really just bothers me that people don't read the reviews to figure out these things. That's what they are there for.The forum is for useful questions and discussions, not "Does this have texture?" or "Should I get this?" as the only text in the thread.

It's curious, though, that you regain composure at the end of your post, yet still see fit to post it?

It absolutely annoys the shit out of me when someone feels the needs to HAVE to start as many paid threads as they can. I refuse to go into them. And their posts are usually not worth reading or just repeats of what someone else genuinely asked.

I think the paid threads should be cut down to help prevent annoying everyone else who aren't point farming in the forum.

I think if these people get flagged a few times, they need to get a warning that they need to post substantial threads or they will have their posting privileges locked.
