I just can't sew but sure wish I could modify some of my lingerie. Almost all of my lingerie could use some help!
Will you modify a piece of lingerie to make it fit?
08/16/2010
I have modified a few of my lingerie garments. Often, things won't stay put on my bony shoulders. I have considered making my own lingerie. I sew a lot--I hate it, but it is a means to an end. I make costumes, but I like wearing them a lot more than making them. My male significant other sews a bit, too. Such things shouldn't be defined as feminine anymore. I think it's a pretty important skill for anyone to have. I do almost all the fixing around here, though, from sewing to plumbing. It's good to fix things yourself!! If you don't know how to do something, look it up on the internet! You might save a lot of money.

I agree you can learn to do almost any thing, if you take the time and do some research. It is great that you can fix things and I have taught a lot of women how to change oil or fix things on their cars. I have even bought my mom a table saw, ladders and tools so she can redo the interior of her house.

For me it never was a feminine thing, I needed something fixed and had to do it myself. Most of my friends growing up would come to me to fix their stuff.

That's great. Especially the Halloween costumes and things like that. I am not a really good seamstress. It was the only class I almost failed EVER, (Home Ec, Sewing, which when I was in school was ONLY for the Girls. I almost failed it.) I have some problems with my sight, and aligning things between the manual movements and the visual perception, (it's neurological, so glasses don't help) so sewing by pattern is a nightmare for me.

It's so cool you do all this, Dwtim!
We got our oldest dd at home a sewing machine for her birthday yesterday, and we're both relearning the Art of Sewing. She's a MUCH better seamstress than I am. She's into CosPlay and things like that, and crafts, so this will be good for her.

I will do slight alterations, like shortening straps or something, but nothing major. I would probably just end up ruining it.

People seem to throw things away rather than fix them, I really noticed this when I worked in a shoe repair shop.
In regards to your dd, good for both of you. Defiantly better than video games.

When I was in Grade School (we didn't have Junior High, just K-8 at the same school) the boys took "Shop" and the girls had to take "Home Ec." They boys were not allowed to take Home Ec and the girls were not allowed to take "Shop." It sucked, because all the boys wanted to be in the cooking class, and a lot of us girls wanted to take Shop. I can change a toilet seat, or drill something or hammer in a nail, but I can't do much else.
The kid (the who got the sewing machine) does love video games (she bought her own system, as I refused to buy one, I think it's a Sega?) has been busy with her machine. She made the most adorable Pikachu Costume, by HAND for some Nerd Fest she and her boyfriend went to recently. They go to the Renn Faire, and making the clothing is so much less expensive than buying. She makes little Japanese toys, out of felt and things. SO cute. We call them her "babies" as she carried them around, like a little kid would. (She's basically an adult, she's highly intelligent, in her last year of college, but very child like.)

Cosplay is what really got my partner and I into sewing, and I acquired a few other good skills from it, too. I have become a bit more social because of it, and I am better with photography and Photoshop because of it. I own an aging house so I have to repair and install things, but cosplay prop making has given me even more skill with power tools, wood, and so on.

Yes I said my sewing machine, my wife can do needle and thread but that's it, I on the other hand have been sewing (mostly upholstery and leather) for 25 years.
Sew if you see something that may be to small or not fit right will you buy it anyway with the intention to modify as needed.

I've fixed a few pairs of really cute underwear by hand before, and I've always used a seam ripper to properly remove tags. I'd like to improve my sewing skills so I can make babydolls fit me better, they're never quite right on me. :/

I think Cosplay is fun, and I really have fun seeing what my kids will come up with. My nephew is also into it, and we've all gone to the Renn Faire together, as well as Harry Potter Festivals in full regalia. My daughter (the one who does a lot of Cosplay, with friends and her boyfriend) won a Hermione look-a-like contest at the Potter Festival that coincided with the release of Book 6. (Or maybe it was Book 7. I can't remember. One of the villages near us (the place where I was born) would have the entire downtown area of the village as Diagon Alley, and had all kinds of great stuff for the release of the Harry Potter Books. We were really sad when the last book came out, not only because the series was over, but because the Festivals were not going to be held anymore. The village went All Out on these.

I'm a big fan of Imagination and encourage the Cosplay. It's fosters imagination and also new hobbies and skills, like sewing or woodworking, even metal work.

Yes, i have.

It depends what kind of lingerie.
If it would be a sexy costume, then yes. If it were a corset probably not.

I'm actually doing just that right now, lol.
I just recently got my Costume in from EF via buyout review and while it fits everywhere else, it unfortunately doesn't fit me in the chest (it's a bit too big). So, I've been modifying it so that it will fit! I'm fairly good at sewing (primarily hand sewing) and I asked my Mom for some pointers on it since I have never sewn vinyl before, I figured it was a good idea It's coming along fairly well!
I'm the type of person who will modify just about anything if I need it to fit, or even just make improvements to suit me. But I'm very careful in doing so.

Neither of us are big enough to need this (yet), but I used to when I was little. Can do if need be.

Three years on costumes crew, baby! Of course I'd modify that shit. You get the best stuff putting in a little extra elbow grease :]

I put "other" because I personally do not sew, but I totally WOULD alter garments, including lingerie, if I could! That is awesome that you can sew and that you are willing to alter things for your wife.
10/16/2010
I modify all of my lingerie, from removing pesky pieces of fabric to sewing thigh-highs to fit better. It's fun and can sometimes make a piece that much hotter.
