I have a family member with special needs. Because of that, I find myself less tolerant of people who choose not to apply themselves. I am very understanding when it comes to those who have learning disabilities, medical issues, roadblocks they are overcoming, and so on. However, if people have a healthy brain and choose to act dumb, I get annoyed.
Do you have any similar feelings toward certain people?

I completely understand. My brother has autism so severe he will never be able to live on his own, but when he was younger he wanted to be an ophthalmologist. For one thing, it makes me critical of those who hide their children behind their diagnosis (especially if imaginary!) and those with normal functioning that have no goals in life.
So I have conversations like this:
"He can't sit still, he has ADHD!"
"He can't sit still because he's five and you give him Oreos whenever he wants. You haven't exactly encouraged self control."
And I get dirty looks as a result because they don't understand where I'm coming from. I have little to no sympathy for those that don't teach their special-needs children the skills they need out of guilt or ignorance, and I have even less for those that refuse to learn.
