We're car shopping and are looking for a car with really good fuel economy, along with high quality and a top safety rating. We've narrowed it down to a handful of contenders and wanted to get some input from the Eden community.

Which of these hybrid cars would you buy?

If you were us, and you were looking for a high-quality, safe car with excellent fuel economy, which of these hybrid cars would you choose? For each car, I've listed the fuel economy in combined city/highway miles per gallon (mpg) as well as the price and a link to the CNET review of each car.
For discussion: do you own one of these, or a hybrid I haven't listed? Do you know someone who does? Please share your experience. Thanks!

From your choices, I prefer the Ford C-Max. I personally will not invest in a hybrid, I do city and highway driving 50/50, so a hybrid won't save that much for me.

i don't think hybrids are that great, i would love to get a Fiat though, its GREAT on gas.

Are you interested in the Fiat 500? I think it's a gorgeous car, and it's on my shortlist for when I replace MY car (which hopefully won't be for a couple years more).

Its 34 combined city/hwy mpg IS good for a gasoline car. The $18,000 price tag is also good. It's supposed to be pretty peppy. And I LOVE the looks. Unfortunately, my wife isn't willing to consider a two-door car.
What don't you like about hybrids?

I would get any of them, personally. Hybrid has its ups and downs from the things that I have read about it, defientely would be intrested in learning a little more about what hybrid has to offer.

My mom has a Jetta and it's a fantastic car!

I drive a standard civic for work, ( I put thousands of miles on each month) and I get about 39 MPG. I only payed 17K for it brand new. And the service work is alot cheaper then the hybrid civic, if and when you need some service done.

I have an "old school" Prius and LOVE it.

No Prius for me

That was my wife's old car, which has finally given up the ghost after 300k miles. She bought it new in 1995! She didn't do quite as well on mpg as you. We checked it religiously and the best we ever did was 37, usually 33 (mix of city/hwy).

I think she's crazy not to get another one, but she wants a change.

If you don't mind my asking...how many miles do you have on it? Any problems, or anything you don't like about it? Have you replaced the batteries and if so, how much did it cost you?
Sorry if that's too many questions, but...I want to know!

I wish we could go car-free, but my wife's work isn't close to any mass transit and most of my clients aren't, either. Maybe someday...

Looks like you guys are thinking pretty much the same thing my wife and I are thinking - the Prius C has both the lowest price and the best mileage. It's not a luxury car by a long shot, but we don't need anything fancy. We're going to test drive one this week, if any of the Toyota dealers around here have one on the lot....

We have about 75,000 miles on it. The one thing I didn't know is that there are TWO batteries in it -- the one that starts it and the main battery that stores energy. We have had to replace the one that starts it, and that was a pain -- but was only about $150. That battery is in the back under the spare tire.

I can't think of anything I don't like about it. I doubt I'll ever drive anything but a Prius. And it's much roomier than it looks. I have a friend who travels about 50K a year for work (self employed) and I keep telling him he should get a Prius, but he says it doesn't have enough room. I keep telling him there's plenty for the stuff he has to travel with, but he won't believe me.

That sounds good. If you don't mind one more question: how long have you had it?
We have 3 friends with Priuses, and we've ridden in one; it was bigger than my wife's Civic and pretty much the same as my car (actually the Prius had more headroom and, as a hatchback, had at least as much usable trunk space). I'd heard they were silent at low speeds, so that didn't surprise me. But it seemed to have excellent acceleration, which did surprise me.

Unless they start making hybrid sports cars like the Tesla cheaper I'll never own a hybrid.
03/03/2013
Right now, we're leaning heavily towards the Prius. We're probably going to get a "certified pre-owned" one.

Toyota Prius C - 51 mpg, $18, 950
