When you have a birthday party for a loved one, do you bake a cake or go buy one?

Contributor: Bignuf Bignuf
We noticed recently a lot of people who (forgive the stereotype) might have, in years past, been baking birthday cakes (soccer mom types), in line at our local market and bakery, buying birthday cakes for their kids and for parties.

We wonder how many people bother baking their own "birthday cakes" for family or friends anymore?

Do you???

We (my family and I) usually bake our own unless we want an ice cream cake or we're decorating it specially and we want it to be smoothly and nicely frosted, and then we usually just order it plain and add our own decorations. We did a really fun one for my uncles retirement/graduation party a few months ago. Then my bf and I baked a zebra striped cake last month for my birthday! (:

I always bake the cake. I even bake my friend's birthday cakes. I'm not a huge fan of store bought cakes.

I usually bake them - I do way more decorating on cupcakes, but I like to make somewhat elaborate cakes. Plus, it's a lot less expensive to make one than buy one, even though it takes time

I do it for my kids, of course. I also do it for my husband, Mom, Dad, brother, and a friend or two. I usually buy them unless I feel like making one of my special recipes I can never make enough of.

It depends on what kind of cake they want and if I have time to make it.

If its a big party we buy one...I have been working on perfecting the cake baking with some mild success. I have even gone so far as to make my own frosting-WAY EASY! The family likes my cakes better than the store cakes.

It depends...if we have a specific type of cake that we want, such as one that would require edible paper and ink to decorate the cake we will buy it from the local bakery. Generally for the adults, however, we prefer to make it since the adults seem to appreciate it so much more.

Depends on the person's preferences. For my boyfriend, I always bake cupcakes. For my mom, I usually buy a cake.

When i was a kid i preferred to my parents to buy a cake for my party rather than bake one, since i always wanted an ice cream cake. But when i got older and there wasnt a yearly birthday party for myself sometimes my friends we're kind enough to bake me a cake. The last two years i've made my partner a cake for his birthday since i can't afford to get him a gift usually, and it's hard to find a read-to-eat vegan cake at the store. I enjoy baking cakes for my friends and love ones for their birthday, but sometimes it's a chore because of school or work or life in general so store bought is sometimes a good option.

That actually looks really smooshy and delicious (I enjoy smooshy cakes).

As for our birthdays, it depends on whose birthday it is. I like cakes baked for me, unless a Cold Stone Creamery cake is purchased. But then again, I'm not particularly picky and don't mind, as long as it tastes good. I generally buy a cake since I cannot bake or cook whatsoever.
