I have a friend at work who thinks my children's names are really strange and she prefers more traditional names. She also hates when a person's name has a unique spelling. This brings me to the poll. With all the celebrity names that are out there right now (Apple, Blue, Maddox, etc) what are your thoughts about names? What are your favorite names? What names do you hate?
What kind of names do you prefer?

My kids names are traditional as is my name and my husbands, but I honestly don't care what anyone names their kid as long as they are happy with it that's all that matters.

Don't really want kids anytime in the near future (if at all), but I love nature-based names. River, Rosemary, Basil, Ivy, Rose, things like that. Aside from that, I have a soft spot for the name Dulcinea - could call her "Dulce" for short.

I don't like names after object for the most part (apple?!) but that is about it.

I'm with your friend--I hate names with 'unique' spelling. It's not unique, it's just annoying and your kid will probably dislike it too when everyone gets it wrong.
I dislike made up names as well. And anything that rhymes with hayden, jayden, aiden, peyton, layten, dayton....like, get over it already.

My family all has ordinary names but there are several unique names that I like. I don't care what others name their kids but they can't get mad when someone doesn't pronounce it correctly. There was a story on the news that a mom got in a fight with teacher over the pronunciation of her daughters name. Her name is "Le-ya", which you would think is similar to "Leah", the proper pronunciation is Le-dashia. LOL

When I have kids, I want to make sure they are the only person in their class with their name... but thats just me.
05/25/2012
I like classic names, but my hypothetical kid wouldn't have one.
05/25/2012
trendy and/or classic.

Having grown up with a unique name (it's a foreign name that was popular in its country several decades ago, and I've never met anyone else named the same as me), I can tell you that it's no fun. Most people who want to name their kids uniquely seem to have grown up with normal names themselves, and underestimate the amount of teasing their kid can face. It will set them apart, just keep in mind that can be negative aspects to it. I personally prefer classic names that aren't as common, like Charlotte.

I like most of the uniquely spelled names and some pretty original ones but classicly spelled classic names can be pretty cool too.
05/25/2012
I don't care too much. If I like a name, I like a name, doesn't matter the spelling, origin, etc.
05/25/2012
I prefer classic but uncommon names.

I like old timey names, names that were popular in the 20s-40s. Names that your grandparents probably have. Unfortunately, it looks like those are becoming trendy now. Sigh...

I like somewhat traditional names and I prefer things with more 'classic' spelling, but really it doesn't matter. I just personally wouldn't name a child something hard to pronounce or easily confused.

While my name isn't uncommon, it is much more common with the opposite gender, so I have an idea of what that's like. I hear a lot of people who act like it's naming a pet, with ridiculous names based on a flight of fancy. I've asked what happens if the kid hates it and one response I've received is that "if they don't like it, they can change it."
One, it takes years before someone is old enough to legally change their name, during which the bulk of the teasing will occur. Two, after a lifetime of being associated with one name, it's not going to be easy to suddenly be associated with another, adding more trauma to their child's life.
I've always thought that the way a person names their child shows their empathy, humanity and intelligence.
also, here's a link of the worst baby names of 2011.

Classic names because I actually like them better.
05/25/2012
Classic and unique spellings both work for me. My daughter's name is classic with a unique spelling, while my son's is classic with a classic spelling.
05/25/2012
I like most baby names. When I was naming my son I just wanted him to have a name that was easy to pronounce. My given name was so hard to pronounce that I ended up never using it. Classic is nice, trendy is fine, just make it something that people can say!

I wasn't sure what to vote so I voted I don't care. But I have a boy name and a girl name picked out for when I have my first child. They are both a little unique and not overly common but not crazy weird.
05/26/2012
Traditional and classic names for the most part. I've never understood naming your child with something that can haunt them for life.
Now, I have a classic name with a unique spelling. Just about everyone spells it wrong even when I put the correct spelling on paper for them.

I'm not into made up names, good for the ones that it works for, but just give me something my kid can spell and not get teased about.
05/28/2012
I love names and my tastes are ALL over the place. I like everything from Caroline to Finch. I have a massive list of names for future pets and a separate one for future children. I'm a little obsessive about it. I just find names to be so interesting!
05/28/2012
I like all of the above EXCEPT trendy names with unique spellings. Those drive me nuts!
06/26/2012
I like classic names, but not overused ones. Thing like John, David, etc. are just too cliche if you ask me.
06/26/2012
Traditional for me.
