The only real scandal is that Obama excoriated Bush for doing all of these 'violations of privacy'. The reality is that he has done more drone strikes and more ease-dropping than Bush ever did. But there's no penalty for lying to the electorate!
By the way - IMO there is no violation of anyone's privacy. Billions of calls, texts and emails cannot be read or listened to - believe me, your life is not that interesting!
Phone & internet companies have used this same meta-data for decades to prevent intrusions and fraud on their networks - they even use the info to sell you things.
Why would you object to that same information being analyzed by software systems to catch terrorists, drug dealers and human traffickers?

Because that isn't all it's being used for. When the government claims A, you better look at least through possibilities b-h.
It's not just for terrorist, and they don't really want to stop the drug dealers or it would already be done. I promise if the United States government really wanted to stop the cartels in Mexico it would be done, and done quick. Mexico would gladly take help destroying the cartels.. but the government makes too much money busting smugglers and then selling the money to finance things that aren't in the budget.
