What do you think of comparative discussions? Should they be used only to compare products?

Contributor: spiced spiced
I remember the first time I saw a comparative discussion used for something other than comparing products, I thought it was just...wrong. But then I began to see the potential: you can ask a question in multiple parts, something which is awkward (at best) with a regular poll or discussion.

And some comparative discussions, like this one are nothing short of brilliant.

What do you think? Should comparative discussions be used only to compare products? Or do you find other uses also valuable?

I think they work well for some other things. It really depends on the topic/question.
