Are you happy with just a card, or well wishes over the phone, or do you prefer a gift? Do you prefer a gift card or cash, or do you like something the giver picked out for you?
What do you consider the perfect gift for you?

If someone gives me a gift I'd much rather it be personal, even if it's just some socks in my favorite color. I think that my ideal gift would be an awesome book that someone wrote notes to me in or a mixed tape, though I also like more 'physical' gifts like albums and dresses.

I really don't like cards, like, what do I do with them? I can't KEEP all of them, but I feel bad throwing them away...

I feel the same way about the cards, unless they wrote such a lovely message that I wanted to keep it, otherwise, I feel badly for chucking them into the recycle! I appreciate wanting something that shows some effort went into picking what you would like & can use. Unfortunately, I rarely get what I like, I get what the giver likes, ha ha! I'm certainly grateful for it all, I'm not saying otherwise, but I really would like a gift card or money, even though I kind of cringe admitting it & definitely would not suggest it, unless specifically asked would I like that.

I like gift cards, and money usually. People don't usually know what to buy for me.

I love giving personal, homemade, thought out gifts to others and enjoy receiving them just as much! It deeply touches me when someone takes the time and effort to think about me and consider what might be the perfect thing for me. Buying me something that doesn't interest me makes me feel like I'm not cared about. I'm SO EASY to give things to because I appreciate things so much..so it just shows how much someone cares when they give you something that isn't at all like you.
*Example*
I don't wear dresses, ever. For Mother's Day, my Mom decided to bring me one as a gift to 'bum around the house in'. Just irritated me because a) it's not even a color/pattern I would wear and b) had no thought put into it. It was like she grabbed something from her closet that she hadn't worn yet and gave it to me. Stuff that like just plain hurts. I'd rather receive nothing than something like that.
Sorry if that sounds harsh..just really got to me.

I think that the gift is not what is important but the thought behind it

I love it when my daughter brings me things that she makes in school. Sometimes just a big hug and a kiss is perfect.

Homemade gifts are my most favorite. Having knit and crochet'd many gifts in the past myself I understand the time, love and effort put into each piece of yarn or thread. Anytime someone takes that same amount of caring into a gift for me I treasure it.

Absolutely! And every time you see it/use it, you are reminded again about all the time they spent thinking about you while making it!

@ melissa 1973, nothing is as sweet as gifts from children, even a sticky hug/kiss!
@ PoP, as stacylyn said, it's the thought that counts & clearly, there was no thought, or not much put into your dress. All I can think of, is maybe she thinks you would look pretty in it & was trying to encourage you to wear it for that reason. But, you know your mother, and I don't, so I expect you know exactly what the situation was. I'm sorry to hear it hurt your feelings! I know when my mom gives me something like clothing, or anything where personal tastes may differ, she always gives me the return receipt, or says she'll take it back & get me anything else I'd rather have.

As long as the gift is from the heart, I will love it.

I love Target gift cards

A card or well wishes are fine with me. It's nice to be thought of. However, a gift card is always welcome!

Lot's of things, I guess it depends who I'm getting the gift from. If it's from my boyfriend usually he knows what I want and buys it for me. If it's from extended family, you can't go wrong with gift cards/cash money lol. I know some people believe that giving cash or gift cards is not personal enough, but I'd rather have cash and buy myself something I want/need over something they picked out that I secretly don't like but feel bad returning because they tried.
