I just ran across this article, about a dress made with animal nipples (or, really the nipple and the circle of skin around it). It's cause quite a sensation. I'm a vegan, and from my point of view this is no worse and no better than a leather jacket. But I'm curious as to what the EF community thinks, particularly omnivores. Is this worse than leather? If so, why? What do you think about other peoples' reactions to the garment? What do you think about the artist? And, er, sorry about the bummer post.
What do omnivores think?

It's disgusting but it is using a part of the leather that isn't traditionally used, so I'd say it's a good thing.

I am not an omnivore, but a vegetarian. I'm not really offended by it, but I do agree with one of the comments on the Daily Mail page that, yes, it's cool that the designer is recycling what would otherwise be wasted, but that the industry shouldn't exist in the first place. But that's neither here nor there!

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I wish leather was never used, but if it has to be, use all of it.

I think its a creative use of parts of leather that dont get used. I think all parts of the animal that is killed should be utilized in some fashion. That just might be my background in studying lakota art and culture, but there is a use for everything!

Leather is a by product of the meat industry and always has been.
People have always eaten meat and always will. (This is coming from a former vegetarian and the mother of one.) Individual people can choose what THEY eat or wear, but not what others choose to eat or wear.
I didn't click on the link, because I don't need to see it. Leather would go to waste if not used for clothing, garments, furniture, BDSM gear etc because there will always be hides left over from the meat and even drug industries. And, many people choose to use leather in their everyday lives.
Making a "Political Statement" with a piece like this is not going to change anyone's mind as to what their diet or clothing choices are. The OP is free to exercise his or her free will, as well.
You can choose to eat or not eat whatever you like, but we all have free will and will always exercise it.
Plus, on this site there are a lot of people in the Leather Lifestyle.

I know, why bother to make a political statement of any kind, ever, under any circumstance? It's futile, of course! Always has been and always will.
Thanks for reminding me of my sudden loss of pessimism! Won't happen again.

I'm from the People for the Eating of Tasty Animals.
I've read the cow nipple article and went to the link provided for the pictures. The pictures showed a very pleasing floral looking design made out of cow and yak nipples which were obtained from already dead animal hides at a tannery.
Pleasing though the design is, I wouldn't buy a nipple outfit for my wife or myself.

Not what I was expecting when I saw the pics. I think it's pretty. I mean, it's high fashion, so it's not something anybody is going to be wearing to the grocery store.
10/02/2011
this is the fashion industry; these people make the rules on what to wear, so of course they're not going to care if it offends a few people. I think it was done in a beautiful way, so it's justified. Besides, waste not, want not, right?
10/02/2011
The idea of it disturbed me, but after seeing the dress, all I see is something beautiful and well-made that uses something generally seen as waste. And if the press on the dresses starts making more people think about the fact that leather is made from animals, I think that's why statements like this exist.

Technically speaking, it's better than a leather jacket, because it's entirely from parts that would have been thrown away (because nobody else wants nipple dresses).

So, not a single animal died to make this.

Wait, wait, wait. It's made of nipples (tannery waste) and no animals died?

I don't think you'd know from looking at it what it's made of - I would never have guessed yak and cow nipples.
10/02/2011
I never would have guessed it was made of nipples either, and I think it's way better than just a leather jacket because it's utilizing things that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill. I'm all for getting as much out of something as you can, and if the animal is going to die to become food anyway, we might as well make the most use out of everything that animal can give us.

I agree. I think it's much more respectful to use *all* of an animal. Still makes me sad, though. Poor cows.

I agree that it's great that it's using the "scraps" that would usually be tossed, but I think the entire thing is a little off-putting.
