What are you afraid of?

Contributor: El-Jaro El-Jaro
A few months ago there was a Childhood Fears thread...but what about now?

Are you afraid of bats? Spiders?

To quote one of my fav movies:
"I'm afraid of spiders...and women...and spider-women".

I'm afraid of swarms, esp spiders, leeches, and ants.

Fire, house centipedes (common where I live), and someone killing me in the shower alla Psycho style.

I just finished explaining that one to a co-worker because we were talking about cleaning and I mentioned I have to have a shower curtain I can see through.

Bugs. All of 'em, but especially bugs that fly. *shudder*

I'm not at all afraid to vroom @ 110 mph on my motorcycle; however, the day a live bug finds its way into my helmet will probably be my last day.

Not afraid of heights; not afraid of pain; not afraid of confrontation; not afraid to work hard and play harder; Not afraid to try new things, etc.. but put a bug near me, sit back, watch the show.

Heights, that's me.

Also, due to bugs, I think I'd have a hard time in FL, LA, and TX.

I was only ever afraid of spiders...damn things seem to be able to read my mind and follow me everywhere. Then a few years ago I found out I have Lyme's Disease and I haven't been able to stand any bug, flying or not, doesn't matter how many legs! You won't catch me outside without a net around my face and bug spray from head to toe

Palmetto bugs (imagine a four/five inch long roach that flies and makes loud[!] crunch sounds when you kill them).

Heights (the vertigo effect).

Hospitals (despite being the child of an RN, I get anxiety attacks while in them; although I have been told I've very entertaining because I say the craziest shit that gets nurses/orderlies/etc cracking up).

Large crowds of people (I don't mind big open spaces, I'm just claustrophobic about being crowded by people).

Stainless steel appliances (after working at the most dysfunctional diner in man's history for two years, I can live without seeing one for the rest of my life).

Groups of children (another work related experience, this one involving a child care center when I was a teenager).

Slasher/gore movies (I get nightmares).

Medical textbooks (see above and the one about hospitals).

Guys in baseball caps and trucks (you won't believe me if I tell you).

Yes, I know I'm neurotic. I just don't say it all outloud.

Las cucarachas! My job is full of them! And centipedes, silverfish, waterbugs...basically all household pests.

Bugs (especially colonies of ants).

Clowns (live person or just a toy).

Hospital elevators (always worry it might malfunction and stop at the lowest floor where the bodies are usually stored. Guess I should say I'm afraid of corpses instead!).

GERMS! I am a total germaphobe...which leads to some serious OCD.

Not a huge fan of spiders but after growing up if FL. where the spiders can be the size of dinner plates I will happily take the spiders we have here in Boston!

Throwing up, I know it's weird! And there is actually a term for it...emetophobia...whi ch could also explain the germphobia!

Actually, I totally agree that cows are totally terrifying up close. When they are allowed to live past milking age (they are usually killed at that point by dairy farmers) they can grow HUGE!!!

I actually had fairly extreme emetophobia when I was younger, although I didn't know it had a name. Apparently it's one of the more widespread phobias. Eventually I grew out of it due to involuntary and accidental "exposure" therapy (read also: college) but it really is an awful phobia. My dad was an alcoholic and I remember him getting violently ill because of his drinking, which is apparently a common way that children develop this phobia.

I don't know if I'm afraid of throwing up, but it's definitely my least favorite thing to do ever. So gross

Otherwise I find myself afraid of tornadoes, massive freaky bugs, needles (but I'm getting better with that), and the occasional someone breaking into my house and killing me...but that's going by the wayside as well.

I still have it. It can really limit your life sadly! "Exposure" therapy sounds scary! My husband actually found the name and everything about it when he decided to do a little research on the topic. Another common way of developing the phobia is to have a really horrible throwing up experience...which I have had as a young child, and the fact that I have a stomach of steel so I have actually only thrown up a handful of times....fear of the unknown! It truly is a horrible phobia and is surprisingly common!

That creeps the heck out of me too.

Other dislikes: creepy crawlies, death of loved ones, and things coming out of mirrors.

I am not really afraid of anything. I was taught very earlier that things like bugs are way smaller and are more afraid of me than the other way around. I loathe June Bugs, but not really scared of them. But man are they a pain in the ass. Buzz, buzz, swarm, buzz... errr! Hate em'

I'm afraid of bugs and snakes...and also...(don't laugh...) Peanut butter, or anything with a similar consistency...I haven't eaten peanut butter since I was in primary school, and last semester, I was sucking on one of those caramel apple lollipops, and made the mistake of biting it (it was my first one ever) and a chunk of the caramel came off and stuck the the back of my teeth and the roof of my mouth and I had a panic attack. It was terrifying.
