What annoys you while driving! (or as a passenger!)

Contributor: El-Jaro El-Jaro
It bugs me when people totally disregard the speed limit, either above or below. I do enjoy it when people blow by me and then I see them pulled over. Speeding tickets are such a waste of money!

If you do the math, that extra 10 mph doesn't really get you anywhere that much faster. If the speed limit is 60 mph, that's a mile a minute. If your drive is 60 miles, you'll get there in about an hour. If you go 70 mph, you're only going to get there a couple minutes faster. If you run into a stop light on the way, you're not saving much time at all and risk a $60+ speeding ticket.

Another thing that bugs me: when you're driving through construction and people wait until the last minute to get in the lane. If everyone just merges to the one or two lanes open before they get to the lane closure, the whole thing will go faster.

I don't typically go below but I do tend to speed. I don't really do it to get anywhere faster, though. Habit, I think. What I really hate though is when people speed and then lane weave! Ya know the ones, they think that they will make it on a movie similar to Tokyo Drift if they do it enough.

And UGH yes those people! THOSE people! And then half of them don't use the signal while budging over!!!

I hate when people run out in the middle of the road (I'm looking at you, construction workers!) Avoiding them makes me want to hit them.

i dont like it when i go in the left lane to pass a slow driver, AFTER i would be behind them for a couple minutes, they speed up, which makes me have to go even faster just because at that point i want the satisfaction of seeing that person in my rear view. i hate drunk drivers, ive had too many close calls with them, especially when im on the road later at night. another would be when cops tailgate you. seems to moreso happen at night but several times a week i'll be driving and a cop passes (im doing between the limit and 5+) and the cop will speed really fast to catch up to me and tailgate me, through turns, for blocks. i also dont like being behind people that have no brake lights. for some reason by one of my friends it seems to be a meeting ground for people that have no brake lights.

something more personal, and ive proven to different people im capable of it, but i become what a call a "subdivisionist". i can judge anyones driving habits within my and neighboring subdivisions, and tell where they are going to turn/live. this is an annoyance because a lot of people that live around me either go 15 in the 25 or want to do 40 in the 25.

People who run red lights. There are specific red lights in my area that get run every single cycle of the light. When I'm a cop, I'm going to camp them and write a boatload of tickets.

I hate when left turning lane people almost head on hit me because they took the turn too sharp. I hate anyone who jay walks at night. I hate having someone ride my car. I hate when people break every 5 secs for no reason. I could go on for hours.

First off as a bicyclist, I hate riding on main roads. The trail where I go ride, I have to ride on a main road for about a quarter mile, but I wait until it is mostly clear. Then I am on side roads in a business park that aren't very busy. I hate riding on the roads because it is too tiring trying to keep up with cars, and I almost get hit way too often.

Now as a driver, I hate people who don't pay attention to the speed limits. Like the person I pass doing 70 in the 65, fine. But then when I hit the 55 and slow down, but they pass me still doing 70, it drives me nuts! The people who attempt to multi-task and can't pay attention. Reading the newspaper, talking on the cellphone while holding it in their hand, laptop on the dashboard, and even a women using an eyelash curler while driving

I also hate the people who slowdown on the freeway way before the exit ramp, even though the exit ramp is wide open. Keep your damn speed up!

I would probably have to say my BIGGEST pet peeve when Im driving is people who dont signal or when they abuse the turn signal and leave it on forever and they are in the city and you are not sure if they are getting ready to turn or not.

people who weave in and out of traffic recklessly. 1st of all it makes me laugh when we both arrive at the stop light at the same time, so it didnt get you to your point of destination any quicker. 2nd reason why i dont like it because it's dangerous and most of the time they dont use their turn signal so you dont know know if they are going to be changing lanes or not. And that links to my biggest pet peeve above.

Here's a new one:

The people who speed like hell to cut you off and then once they've cut you off realize that there was less space between you and the car in front of you than they though, and they must slam on the brakes, all the while, not having their signal on while nearly causing you to rear-end them!

PS- yesterday my coworker's husband was rear-ended, guy totaled the car (the one that hit him) and turns out the other guy doesn't have insurance. The guy was busy texting AND lighting a cigarette while driving thus causing the accident.

Other than distracted drivers.
People who take it upon themselves to act "in loco parentis", Latin for "in the place of a parent" to force ME to slow down.

I regularly exceed the speed limit but only on either limited access roads ie Autobahn, Interstate Highway or out in the country with little or no traffic. You should know that for most of us who do that, it isn't a matter of saving time. It's primarily for the adrenaline rush.
Take heart though JR, my home state as of 01/01/2011 changed the law for exceeding the posted limit by forty mph or more to be a criminal offence with mandatory jail time. As such I have not driven over ninety four mph since.

Please if you are on a multi-lane highway and are not yourself a POLICE OFFICER and you see a little black car coming up fast behind you
Get the hell out of my way!

(no offence intended JR, there is a moderately amusing story behind the get out of my way statement)

This gives me a twitch, actually. There have been multiple deaths in my state in the past couple of months from people speeding (not intoxication, not from being on the phone, not from falling asleep, just speeding) that kill other people. Speeding for pleasure should be kept to drag races, Nascar, and the like because normal, safe drivers just want to get to work, get their kids to school, get to their doctor's appointment, get to their family's home, etc. in one piece.

Try to understand, it is someone's inattention that caused those untimely deaths you spoke about.
The majority of "normal, safe drivers" are thinking about their grocery shopping list, what their boss or spouse said to them, listening to music, etc. In other words thinking about anything else than what is going on around them.
When I or my other adrenaline addicted brethren are driving quite fast, NOTHING ELSE intrudes upon our concentration of what we are doing and what is going on around us.
If you consider ME to be a danger to you, so be it.
I am unapologetic.

Whether you are paying careful attention or not, when you speed you're putting yourself and everyone else in danger. If you're going faster than the rest of the traffic, you have to weave in and out to avoid the "slower" vehicles, which are obeying safety laws. That alone increases your risk. Also, if there's an obstacle in the road, your stopping distance and reaction time are considerably cut. A deer, a water puddle that causes you to hydroplane, a car that slows down before exiting, a car stopped on the side of the road, etc. Also, the faster you go the less traction your tires have with the road. It's completely undeniable that you're a risky driver.

Plus I have never, ever met a repetitive speeder that is actually focused on the road, as they all claim to be. It's the same thing as people being on the phone and claiming they can multitask better than everyone else in the population. You're just kidding yourself and an accident waiting to happen.

But at least don't be mad at those obeying the laws when they don't move out of your way to continue to make the wrong, and illegal, decision to speed. Driving is a privilege, not a right, and can be revoked.

So true!

But what's really super nice and is nice leisurely drive alone on the highway at night. Ahhhh, windows rolled down, perfect temperature, sounds of the night, etc.

I hate when people try to multitask when drive. If you need something done, ask me instead of risking my fucking life dammit! And last but not least, i hate when people drive FASSSTTTT for no reason. If it's an emergency or something, cool. But to drive fast just to do it, that's fuckery.

Yes when I'd previously been driving in traffic over a hundred mph (my current sportscar is limited to one twenty and yes I've driven it at that limit in traffic) I've weaved in and out to get around slower vehicles.
I would however disagree that those "slower vehicles" were obeying safety laws, the law states "Slower Traffic Keep Right" In other words, "If you see a little black car coming up fast behind you. Get the hell out of my way!", I was in a courthouse when I originally made that statement.
You will never convince me that I should slow down when the need for speed hits me. Life's way too short to argue over such trivialities, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.
If however you're really interested, keep watch for me to post on various topics here on EF. If I don't for quite some time I may very well be in jail from exceeding forty mph over the speed limit or dead from a collision.
In any case, I remain unapologetic.

BTW I too enjoy a nice leisurely drive at or even below the speed limit on the highway at night with the top down.

Although I am not a lane weaver and am extremely careful about not cutting people off, either, I tend to drive pretty fast at times.

I was pulled over at 3am driving home from a few hours away doing 106 (I believe?) although I didn't end up in court, just with a high-priced ticket. I have photos of my speedometer on various occasions because an ex of mine joked around when I explained why it took so long to get to her house that I was driving 60mph and she said "you know how to drive less than 20 miles over?!" so just for kick I took some photos but in most of them I'm doing 80+.

I do speed but only during safer conditions (not much traffic, other fast drivers)

My biological father died in a car crash, though, so I'm paranoid about when I drive fast, and don't dare lane weave. Not while driving fast, anyway.

That's the first post I've seen where it's been about someone in the car with you rather than another driver. That's a good point though - it's not always something external.

To add to yours, I hate driving with my mother. I am one of the safest drivers I know and yet she always makes me feel horrible cause she's gasping, clinging, and trying to stomp down on an imaginary brake when she rides with me. "Mom, we're going 15mph... in an empty parking lot... Could you pop a Nicotine gum or something for me?"

I also hate it when I'm the passenger and the driver decides to text or to try and change the CDs or find something in the backseat. I will pretty much scream and threaten to jump out of the car if they don't watch the road lol.

Oh! I hate it when I'm listening to one of my radio shows and I come up to a stop light and at just the point I stop is when the signal is lost. And if I had the room to move up or back about 4 feet, the signal would come back, but I never have that room.

It may not do anything to convince you, and that's fine, but it may affect someone else. Excessive Speed is a Factor in One-Third of All Fatal Crashes

I’m really skittish when I drive and I don’t like highways. I hate it when people do not signal, run red light and do not stop for stop signs. I don’t like it when people flash their high beams at me I know its in warning that is why it doesn’t bother me much but I would rather not have the light in my eyes. Also for those who like to KEEP their high beams on all the time you need to be slapped. Be kind, turn them off when you are behind some one or going past some one especially if you have those blue lights.

Sorry if I sounded rude but that stuff actually hurts my eyes.

I lived in Germany several times. The last time I was with the US Army and had acquired a new car that would go according to "Road and Track" magazine 155 mph, it did. My spouse had relatives in Switzerland so we regularly drove from Hanau, Germany to Rheinfelden, Switzerland that's 365K or about 226 miles on the A5 Autobahn.
Once we were driving back to Hanau from Berchtesgaden on the A9 in the left lane at about 150mph. I saw in my rear view mirror, out of the corner of my eye, someone flashing their brights. That's the international signal for "you're going too slow, get the fuck out of my way". So I moved over to the middle lane and slowed down to about 140 mph. Right about then a big V12 Mercedes passed me like I was sitting still, must have been going about 200 mph. Yes they have performance shops there in Germany too.
So after thousands of hours of seat time over a hundred mph, I have just a bit of confidence in my skills at high speed driving. Even Ninety Four just doesn't seem so fast after that.

I always try to avoid people on motorcycles and I don't so much mind them, in fact one of my best friends' fiance is in a bike gang and I absolutly adore the guy, and his friends! But I just don't like it when people aren't being safe -_-'

I was in a car once with a friend, she was driving, and some guy on a motorcycle was cutting between cars and didn't realize that there were those reflective bumps on the yellow lines, well we had this snow recently and it left a pothole where the bump used to be, and I guess it made him skid on the loose gravel and he crashed into the car and his head went through the back window. Scary stuff! Be safe
