I included parts related to killing people only because, sadly, there are occupations like that legally... For example soldiers, or those who execute people...

I could kill a human or an animal in self defense most definitely.

I could absolutely kill an animal! I definitely want to try hunting some time (making sure to eat all the meat and utilize the hide + all other body parts so as not to be wasteful). I've killed more than my share of plants, mostly by forgetting to water them, and I think the only flora I would hesitate to kill would be rare plants (like at an arboretum) or trees (because they're so large and oxygen-producing).

As for people, I certainly wouldn't kill anyone unless necessary, but if someone tried to kill me or someone I love then I would not hesitate for a moment.

Ok... this is one of the stranger threads I've seen here.... disturbing even. Probably even worse than the necro thread.

For some strange reason, when I hear my neighbours fight, and the smacking and beatings they give each other, I get annoyed that they are disturbing my peace. But if I see someone kick a dog, oh my knickers get in a twist and I kick them right back.

I can tolerate people hurting people, but I cannot tolerate any form of animal abuse.

Let me just say this now, I do not see hunting as animal abuse or even animal cruelty. I see it as part of a proud tradition kept alive to remind many of us of how it used to be before we could buy a slab of deer at the store.

I have no doubt that I could kill a human if the need ever arises, say someone attacking my family or in a time of war.

I have killed many animals, all for food and I do not regret it one bit. That animal put food on my table and allowed me to enjoy time with my kids at a much better price than beef, I might add. We always hunt "Fair chase", we do not trap and kill, use dogs or hunt where there are fences. We are mono e mono with the animal in there world. We are all archery hunters, this means we are less than 20 yards from the animal. Ever try getting that close to a deer whose eyes and ears are a hell of a lot better than ours? Ya, not easy.

Plants/trees/mushrooms , ya more than I can count. I cut my grass, cut wood to heat my home, collect mushrooms for food and I have been known to collect flowers for the wife too.

I could probably do all of the above in self-defense and I think I could kill plants/animals if I was hungry, especially if a loved one was hungry too. I wouldn't like it though (Other than plants, I don't care about eating plants. I still feel bad for accidentally killing a plant I had in a garden of mine though!).

I've killed tons of plants. I'm a strict vegetarian. I might be able to kill a human or an animal in self defense, but I don't know. I really don't want to, but I think it comes down to the actual circumstances.

I have assisted the death of animals -- taken very old, incurably sick ones to the vet to be put down, for example. I'm not against mercy killing for terminal and painful conditions (for humans or animals). I don't know if I could do it myself though -- I'd be afraid of messing up and causing more pain. I'm no doctor.

I could kill a human in self-defense.
I could kill an animal in self-defense or if it had fewer than 5,000,000 neurons.
I could kill plants and mushrooms.
I have not killed a human.
I have killed animals with fewer than 5,000,000 neurons and both regretted and not regretted it.
I have killed countless plants and mushrooms and only regret those that were endangered or threatened.

When I say kill, I mean directly and indirectly.

The only ones I enjoy killing are plants and mushrooms, because they're so damn tasty.

I find it interesting that so far more people have voted that they could kill a human than an animal.

I think it depends on the animal for me. I can kill bugs and spiders with no guilt, but I'd have a harder time with something like a dog or a horse.

I don't think I could kill a person unless possibly it was something like assisted suicide where they were suffering from a terminal illness and just wanted to end the pain.

I don't understand how you know what animals have more than 5 million neurons.

Of course I've "killed" plants, I garden. It's for food. I also have to weed our garden or plants we want for food or beauty won't grow. I don't believe plants have consciousness.

We've both killed animals that were in deathly distress. A bird that flew into a window and broke her neck. I didn't want her to suffer as she died slowly. I cried the entire time. My husband has had to kill mammals that our malamute got hold of and had broken backs. It's to put the poor thing out of it's misery. Our animal control won't take seriously injured animals, as there is nothing that can be done for them. When you live in the woods, you have to do this once in a while.

A human? If one of my children or myself or my man was threatened, maybe. But, it would haunt me for the rest of my life. A life is a life.

I do value human life above others. Sorry, I'm a... humanitarian.

Mushrooms? WTF? What difference does it make? It's a fungus. I clean fungus off my bathroom tile on a regular basis. I don't see the big deal at all. They aren't conscious.

I find it disturbing that there are people who have killed someone and say they enjoy it. That is insane. There is only a few good reasons to actually kill another human and they really shouldn't be enjoyable just something you had to do.

I can kill anything or defend myself and my family as best as possible should the opportunity arise. However, if I did that it wouldn't (and shouldn't) be an enjoyable experience. It should be something that I don't regret because I did what I had to do.

I have killed animals before. I've hunted a little bit. But it was usually for food. Stomping on bugs is a different story.

I can't seem to keep plants alive. so they always die on me. I can't help that. Always had mushrooms in the yard growing up. We went stomping on them all the time.

I think the idea of killing humans is easier for a lot of people than killing animals. If you're put in a situation where killing a human is looking like a good option, they probably did something to land you there.

I think the people on the poll saying they have killed a human/animal and enjoyed it are just fucking around. Lol. This poll is kinda random and private so we can vote anyway we want for the fun of it. Lol. Yes I would kill a human/animal if they put my family is danger and were gonna kill any of us, I would then have to defend myself anyway I had to. Do I wanna kill a human/animal? No. But if I have to protect my daughter or husband I would.

I would kill a human in self-defense to protect me and my family. I have unfortunately have had to put my own animals down a couple of times, they had broken backs from a bog bite and could not make it to the vet. One was run over by a car...my ex let it out when he knew better. I also hunt for food and eat the deer or elk I have shot. I do feel bad when I shoot them, but we need the meat they provide.

Want to kill a plant? Give it to me, I cannot keep the dang things alive. Except one which I got when my husband and I first got together. I figured it out, it is 16 years old now!! And I remove the large bracket fungus off trees and paint on them, so yeah, mushrooms/fungus are killed with no thought on my part.

I have an other question, mice have more than 5 million neurons. Now, I don't know where you live, but we live in a wooded area. We get mice in our house, and they attack our food supply, destroy our stores of food, leave disease causing urine and feces everywhere. They also carry lice, tics and fleas that cause our dogs great distress and also then get into our furniture and then they bite US! I am also allergic to fleas bits, and it causes me great distress, not to mention is filthy.

What if your home was infested with vermin like mice, or worse, rats? They can, literally take over your house in a few weeks and even start biting you and your children, not to mention spread disease. If your house was infested, would you do nothing? (I tried that one year, because I don't enjoy killing mice. Not only did the house smell terrible, and feces were turning up everywhere, but when we did decide to take positive action to get rid of them (and this was only after a MONTH of not doing anything about them) we had to throw away over $300.00 worth of food in the cleaning effort. It wasn't worth the wait, and now I get the poison and the traps asap when I see evidence of them.)

I don't relish killing mice, not at all, in fact, it upsets me. But, for heaven's sake, they carry disease. I love my children and my health more than I love mice.

What would you do if you had a rodent infestation? And I can tell you, after decades of living in wooded areas, there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY to "scare them away" in order to get rid of them. I have tried everything before killing them, NONE of it works at all.

Would you simply let a rodent infestation cause illness, food contamination and even bites in your family, rather than kill them?

Question three; do you have your OWN home? Or do you live with parents or rent an apartment? Because if you don't own your own home, then someone else may be responsible for rodent eradication, and you'd be, technically, off the hook. But, the rodents would still be killed by someone.

I'm only asking because, being a home owner I'm responsible for the safety of my family, including the disease elimination, food contamination, filth reduction and killing of rodents. If you rent or live with parents, then someone else simply does it for you.

I have never killed a person, but if I had to choose between protecting my family by killing someone or having them hurt my family then the choice would be obvious. It wouldn't be something that I would like to do, but I'm not going to just allow someone to hurt-kill me nad my family.

Kill a human in self-defense of myself or someone else in life-threatening danger? Without hesitation. One cannot anticipate future regret for an action such as this, but if my feelings follow my current moral compass, I would not regret taking a life for such a reason.

Hunger would drive me to kill an animal, but that's about it. Besides fish. I don't really feel like they count for whatever reason.

If mushrooms pop up in my lawn, they are destroyed. Since I can't identify the good mushrooms from the bad, I consider them all poisonous, and I wouldn't want to risk my pups eating one.

Oh, and hey, did you guys hear there is an addition to the kingdoms? Way freaking cool.

I'd kill anything in self-defense or defense of my loved ones.
I have not personally killed an animal before, but I do eat meat and I'm not against subsistence hunting.
And I have gardened for food, so killing mushrooms and plants are OK by me.

I'm kind of surprised less people would kill a mushroom than a plant. Are there vegetarians against the killing of all heterotrophs?

For self defense, or in a mercy killing, yes. I've gone hunting several times, and although I didn't particularly care for it, if it came down to starving or hunting for food, I'd have no problem with hunting again in that situation. If someone harmed or killed my two boys, there would be no problem with making a slow, and very unpleasant death, happen for that person.

For self-defense yes. I don't think I'd have too much of a problem with it, as sad as that is to say. Grew up in a military family, tend to be a bit of a darker thinking person, plus I foolishly think I could create meaning around the event to where I could justify it. Animals, never, unless it's to end their suffering from something severe.

I've done it as a mercy killing for animals. I hated doing it... but, I just couldn't let them suffer.

I had to end a few lives of animals because I saw them get hit and the people would get out and swear at the poor thing and speed off! Running it over again!

I've had fish die that I owned from not caring for them properly... and my brother and I used to mess with slugs and salt when we were kids... and squash bugs n stuff but I've never outright KILLED an animal for pleasure... I'm not big on hunting either just because I don't eat the types of meat that can be hunted and I think it's distasteful to hunt simply for sport - unless it's to help keep the population from rising too high for an area. There are places in AR where it's illegal to hunt dear etc. except every so many years to keep the population from overcrowding the area.

Anyway...
I could kill a person. I think it would be an interesting psychological experience... what would it be like? Feel like etc.
I wanted to work with criminally insane people who have killed, so I could find out their thought processes leading up to it, how it affected them etc. I just find the concept so interesting because unlike with animals, most humans see each other as equals and so it's almost an unspeakable evil to kill another human... but not an animal.
Then there are those people who de-humanize and see others as less than themselves and objectify them and don't care.

Death, murder etc. Is interesting B| because I wanna know what it does to the psyche.

I'd kill in self defense without a question. When someone intends harm all bets are off.

Contributor: DustBunny DustBunny
I'm not sure I could kill a person unless it was a self defense situation, animals are the same thing really. Unless you are also counting bugs, I will kill an insect without much issue. Plants, I'm not sure how you mean things, with some plants you eat you are killing the plant, such as carrots or potatoes. Things like berries and some fruits are just how these plants reproduce, so you are and aren't killing it.

I have thought to myself many a times "If I ever met _______ in a dark alley, I'd have no issues grabbing her by her hair and hurting her." This isn't to say I would, but they have angered me to the point I'd like to hurt them physically. I work at a hospital and deal with many many rude and bitchy nurses who treat the cook staff as if we are uneducated morons. This can get very tiring and lead to these types of thoughts on some days.

Hmm.. first off, I find it strange that so many are Ok with killing humans, but I suppose there are circumstances (like if you went to war or if it was truly defense) where it would be something one has to do. I also noticed bugs weren't on your list. I just killed a FREAKING spider and am elated. LOL. I don't enjoy killing anything, besides spiders. I would never kill a human no matter what unless I had NO choice--such as if my family were in danger and the person was about to kill/seriously harm us. I have picked a flower as well as mushroom so I suppose I'm a plant killer. I don't just run around killing em' for the fun of it though.

Other than that, I couldn't even stand to see an animal hurt, much less kill one. NO WAY! I'd cry my eyes out for months. People too, gosh, I hate for people to die, but I understand that death happens and that some people, like you said, have it as an occupation. I however, could not work a job that required that. I am too sensitive.

Yes, it is arbitrary. And it's just a rough guess because I've never needed to decide whether to kill anything above that number. I've never been in contact with rats or mice in my home, but if I did I would use catch and release if possible. I do not think my apartment building has any rodent issues because of where we live and the cleanliness, but if they do kill them I don't mind too much. If they were killing, say, cats, I'd be pissed. Rodents, not so much.

Ha, my boyfriend, little brother and I have been talking about this subject lately.

I’ve been watching a TV show called the first 48.

I don’t think I could or would kill someone, but if it was a situation of my life was in danger, or it’s either me or you going to die, the other person is going to die. Where I stand in my life now, I could never kill a person. If my life or the life of someone I love was on the line it’s a whole new ball game.

I could NEVER kill an animal. Most animals attack because they are being messed with by humans, so I don’t blame the animal when it kills someone else. You being he human should know better than to do that. I’m not going to kill an animal for doing what it knows, or what it's been taught. Like fighting animals, you can't blame them, they are doing what they have been told to do, they shouldn't die for that.

Plants, I can kill a plant, haha that doesn’t bother me at all. but then again plants die on me when I'm TRYING to keep them alive.

I told him I didnt want to be with him after he had said he had loved me and 2 days latter he put a gun to his head and that was the end of it. I know now it wasnt my falt but it was really hard to deal with and just thinking if I hadnt been so cold would he still be alive...

I don't think I could kill a human or an animal.

I could only kill someone/thing if I was being attacked. And even then I believe it would haunt me even after choosing the right decision. My, husband, however is trained to kill (he's in the army) and has said that he will kill if necessary, but I haven't really had conversations with his as to what he actually thinks about killing someone/thing.

I included parts related to killing people only because, sadly, there are occupations like that legally... For example soldiers, or those who execute people...

I would never WANT to kill a person or animal. Even hunting for "fun" bothers me, although I understand my hypocrisy as I eat meat. However, I would ONLY kill to defend myself, my family, my country....if the need arose. In that case, I would be RESPONDING to a threat and NO, I would not enjoy it...and might still feel very bad about it....BUT, make no mistake, I would not hesitate to do what was needed.
