Weird question: Does anyone pick at their lips?

Contributor: Carawr2015 Carawr2015
I have a bad habit of picking at my skin, usually my winter-chapped lips, and sometimes I get so self conscious about it that it impacts my personal life (ie. sexy times). Does anyone else have this problem, and if so, is there anything you do to deal with it besides large amounts of chapstick?

OMG! YES. You mean there's another lip-picker out there besides me & my mom?! Holy dangit!

Yes, I pick the skin off my lips. Horrible habit! I've been trying to quit doing it. I have started applying olive oil several times a day to heal the horrible cracks & scabs on my lips. Worked like a charm, and now, when I feel the urge to pick, I'll have skin that's... dead I guess? Lol. But the olive oil heals & moisturizes, so when I do do a little picking, it doesn't leave me with bleeding, cracking & scabs. Try using olive oil on yours. You'd never even know I pick mine just by looking. My lovie used to flip when he'd see my lips after I'd picked. They would look bad and bloody or I'd not realize I picked and it began bleeding & he'd be like "why are you hurting your lips?!" He brings it to my attention when I'm doing it without noticing.

Even worse though, is another habit where I chew little pieces of skin from my jaws & inner mouth. It's been a habit since I was a kid, and I've started thinking it's affected my teeth from the constant biting, so now I'm trying to break that habit. That's a tough one.

Olive oil! I'm telling you. I've tried everything and my lips never would get any better until I began applying olive oil. Coconut oil will do some major healing for them as well, but for some reason, I feel like olive oil has done more for mine.

Actually I don't pick at them, but I do bite them if I don't happen to have a tube of lip balm in my pocket.
It's a habit I really need to get out of though, because I tend to just keep doing it until they'e stinging and raw. x_x

I've never picked at my lips. I do exfoliate them every day after showering to get dry, dead skin off of them. You can do that with a washcloth, toothbrush, or there are recipes online for a lip scrub made out of brown sugar and olive oil.

I chew the insides of my cheeks, but not my lips. It's a horrible nervous habit that I've had for a long time now.

My lips are much too sensitive for me to pick at them, but I do have the terrible lifelong habit of biting the insides of my cheeks, my upper and lower lips, and even my tongue. I don't even notice that I'm doing it until I taste blood, and then I keep doing it. I really wish I would stop, but it's almost like a comfort measure. I do it when I'm nervous, bored, hungry, sad... I need to look for a way to stop, and a nice substitute for it.

I do it when my lips are peeling only because I HATE it when they are peeling.

I bite at the skin when it's peeling. I'm not a huge fan of lip balms and stuff like that just because of how they feel but I don't bite them to the point of bleeding.

I'm really bad about it. If my lips are chapped and or peeling I tend to chew or bite on the skin and pull it off with my teeth. I've made my lip bleed in the past from it. It's probably my one anxious tick since I don it more when I'm ancy for whatever reason.

I found the Victoria's Secret sugar scrub helpful for keeping the skin from peeling. The scrub buffs away dead skin but I have to remember to use it daily or it doesn't work. who woulda thunk it? lol

I only do it when my lips are chapped. It is so annoying when you can feel the skin on your lips.

There are quite a few of us, don't worry!

I've never thought of using olive oil, but it's been recommended a couple times, so I think I'll look into it. My bf lets me know when I'm doing it, too. It's hard to explain to someone who doesn't do it why it's so hard to stop!

I'm sorry about the chewing--that sounds really painful. Good luck in your breaking-the-habit efforts! I know it can be hard. And thank you for the advice!

My son has been doing it all day. There chapped due to the fact that he is pretty sick right now.

Oof, that sounds really painful. I mess with my lips as a comfort measure/coping mechanism, too. I have to really focus on stopping, otherwise I'll just keep doing it without realizing.
This is probably a fairly short-term fix, but would sugar-free gum be helpful to stop chewing, if only for a little while?

It's a bit of a nervous habit for me, too. I'm sorry it's been so bad for you--I know how much it sucks to have raw lips.

I think I'll definitely look into a sugar scrub. That seems like a pretty good way to get rid of the dead skin without picking or biting. Hopefully a homemade scrub will be a little longer lasting!

I'm sorry to hear that--I know that chapped feeling can be so, so irritating. I hope your son feels better soon!

I pick skin off of everything. Lips, fingers, toes, zits, scalp, ingrown hairs, anything. But my bf doesn't mind because he does it too. Sometimes we even pick at each other, it's like a bonding moment hahaha.

I'm addicted to chapstick, so I don't have that problem. I do have dermatillomania and that is just my fingers/skins.

I'm so bad at keeping track of my chapstick, I'm hoping a sugar scrub is a little longer lasting. I have derma as well, and I used to pick at my hands constantly. I've managed to cut back on that with the help of Neosporin/a couple fidget toys, but now my lips are suffering. =/

My lips are too sensitive to peel (ouch!), but I do have a habit of biting mine when I'm thinking though.
