They finally cancelled the NYC Marathon that was supposed to happen today. Was it the right thing to do?

Contributor: Bignuf Bignuf
Hotels were already full of people whose homes were damages, police were not even keeping up with looting, and to run the marathon would have drawn so many more resources away from people needing help after "Sandy" blew through. However, the Mayor claimed it was bringing revenue into the city that was much needed and it would have been a signal that NYC cannot be shut down, while the Governor claimed it needed to be postponed this year.

Do you think cancelling was the right thing to do?

(By the way, Kudo's who were already there for the race and volunteered, instead, to give aid to the people who needed it)!!!

No, the race should have gone on to help the city recover.

The race would detract from the clean up effort I think.

I'm glad they canceled it, there are much more important things to take care of, rather then spending the city's time and energy on the marathon.

I think it was the right thing to do. Starting it on Staten Island, where there is so much devastation would have been a tone deaf move. It makes sense to cancel it for this year.

Yes, given the circumstances I feel it was a good idea.

The only mistake was not cancelling it sooner.

No good reason to have held it. There really should never have been any doubt about cancellation.

Yea, but I wonder if they could have postponed it till like Feb, but then again i don't know what the weather would be like. Too cold?

I thought it was crazy when they said they were still going to do it. I'm glad they cancelled it.

I think there's too much going on right now to have a race. It would just spread resources too thin.

I'm glad they cancelled it. When I heard on the radio they were going to continue it, I was very curious about why.
