I have clinical Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. No, it's not "OMG, I'm SO OCD about my shoe collection!" or "OMG, I'm so OCD about my food." I have actual, clinical inherited OCD.
It isn't actually superstition, it's a neurological disorder most likely caused when the brain makes connections to actions and "consequences" that are really not related. Some people compare it to "overlearning." "Oh, the last time I wore this blue shirt, I had a shitty day. Therefor, the shirt had something to do with it." Intellectually I KNOW this stuff isn't true, but it's hard to argue with your brain chemicals. I am NOT traditionally superstitious, however.
bluekaren, I can't diagnose him, but numbers and needing to have things related to certain numbers or their multiples is very classic OCD symptom. If he HAS to, meaning he has anxiety, and can't relax until his numbers line up, then most likely he has other symptoms he may not be talking about or even realize. Does he have to touch certain things, or keep things a certain way? If it is causing him anxiety or depression, an evaluation by a good professional may help. OCD can't be cured, but it can be treated. Good luck with it.

I was going to vote no, but I do wish on shooting stars and caught dandelion seeds. I do it for fun, I don't really believe any superstitions so I voted only on weekends.

I;m OCD about cleaning. Superstitious? Only when I'm scared, which means I start praying which I consider to be more or less a superstition.
Today, I was freaking out and praying to God that I would get a job (something I would normally not bother doing), but I felt that maybe I was getting a supernatural sign because at the next exit I saw a white dove flying as soon as I entered a town with "olive" in the name.
I couldn't help thinking that since a dove with an olive branch (or in this case, an olive exit) represents peace, that it was something akin to, "peace be with you. Don't worry things will work themselves out."
I'm usually overly logical, but I found the dove comforting.

Nope

I consider the fact that I put meaning behind certain numbers and the outcomes of subtracting or adding their digits together makes me superstitous. It's never been extreme or anything. I don't do it often. Not every number I see is analysed like that.
I associate certain objects with certain meanings or people. Like a symbol. That's basically what I do with numbers.
It doesn't affect my life in any way at all, it's just something I do to pass the time and make myself think about my life.

I sort of am. I believe more in the luck and fate side of superstition than I do stepping on cracks.

Sort of, I'll recite the Mantra when I drive pass roadkill, and when I see black cats crossing in front of my car. I'll try not to walk under ladders. But, I'm not superstitious about Friday the 13s.
06/26/2011
Not really, no.
After paying attention to the stars and physics for awhile, all beliefs in superstition and the supernatural fades away, just like with imaginary friends.

In the sense of believing in ghosts and such, yes. But otherwise I'm not. I roll my eyes anyone refuses to pick up loose change because it's face-down, or goes on about the number thirteen being unlucky. The way I see it, if any superstitions like that were true, they'd be the same around the entire world, and they're not.
Basically, the human brain is really, really good at finding patterns. It's so good at it that it can even find patterns that happen accidentally (Jesus on a piece of toast, for example) or don't really exist, and that's where most superstitions come from.

Not really, no. I believe in paranormal things, but that's different.

I have a few superstitions but they aren't ones that would mean anything to anyone other than me.
12/28/2011
Eh.. I find superstitions to be a bit fun, but no -- I'm not superstitious at all.
12/28/2011
Yes. I got it from my grandpa. The men in his family are all highly superstitious. I am not as bad as them, but I am pretty bad. I won't walk under ladders, take great care not to break glass, don't step on sidewalk cracks, if a black cat crosses my path I find a new one, Friday the 13th/the number 13, itchy palms, opening umbrellas indoors, knocking on wood, tossing salt over the shoulder, pennies, ringing ears, etc. =)

I do believe that the greatest power superstitions have is to believe in them...
If you do tell yourself it's just superstition they won't come true... Sometimes maybe, who knows...
I think it works in that strange way many of you may have experienced: you just think of something, just a quick thought, and oh my God, it comes true in the next day!
It is called the law of attraction...
Our mind has the power to "cast, summon" anything you wish or you fear, it just depends on how you do it, that's why such things can happen even with people who don't believe in it at all...
Practically it is THE magickal power, I think for example the sign thing, if you believe in some signs then the gods let you know what's up, with one they know you believe in, and if you don't believe in it they just don't bother sending it to you...
Or the Almighty... Or da freaky banshees! Whatever you believe in...
So I very much care what I believe works and what not...
And many of them are not some mystical signs, just based on things people noticed eras ago... Like they see some birds flying differently, and the weather always changes the same way... Nothing mysterious about that, it's just scientific facts, just they didn't know in those times...
Same with science in general...
I do think there is still a lot we just don't understand or know about, and people say it's magick, or miracle, or doesn't exist and it's bullshit, but it would be the mindset of folks who didn't believe there were electrons and neutrons and all that stuff, there is always something friggin mindblowing to discover, why not to give it a chance and believe it's true, just for fun... ^^

The thing about superstitions is that they have such common, normal origins. When they were formed they were either the assumption of causal correlation, or had some other meaning entirely. For example, the breaking of a mirror would not automatically give you bad luck, but years - seven, as the saying goes - of financial hardship, because they were so expensive and you'd have to pay the owner back. So, to believe in something like superstition is to believe in deformed reasoning.
PS: I'd like to say thank you to my girl for helping me elucidate on this thought. I'd misplaced it, and she helped me find it.

Usually I am. I like keeping my mind open to the supernatural but try to not let it end up in paranoia.
02/14/2013
I say that I'm mostly not. Sometimes I might go on the jinxing of something but that's really it.
02/14/2013
Difficult to say...I have trouble "tempting fate" by saying that something bad is going to happen, haha. But I'm not concerned about spilling salt or something like that.

I hate to admit it, because I'm an atheist and I tend not to give much credibility to anything that can't be scientifically tested, but I am a bit superstitious. I just don't like the thought of jinxing anything.
