Summertime Sunburns

Contributor: Andromeda Andromeda
If you've had the misfortune of being sunburnt sometime this summer (or you have a good sunburn story to share) from failure to apply or re-apply sunscreen, then come join the pity party!

I spent several hours outdoors today at a sporting event, only to discover when I got home that I missed a strip of my back when I applied sunscreen earlier. Thus, I have a big red stripe of unpleasantness. I suppose I'm lucky that's the only place I'm sunburnt, but ouch, it hurts! Next time, I'm getting someone to sunscreen my back for me >.>

*hugs her bottle of aloe vera*

So, what are your sunburn stories?

Every summer I always manage to get a burn early on while I'm out in a tank top, except it's always the least revealing tank top I own, so anything else I wear I always have these horribly obvious lines the rest of the summer.

Heheh, I can't remember my last sunburns, all I remember is that they hurt! I've avoided even mild tanning situations for over ten years. Yes, I'm very deficient in vitamin D.

Please be very careful in the sun!!

I'm so GD pale I'm transluscent, so you can imagine how living in Florida is!

I used to have some bad ones when we first moved to FL from Missouri (I was ten). My shoulders and face were always peeling. My brother got the worst burns - the type that bubble up and everything.

We finally got into the sunscreen and covering up thing, and now I rarely go outside except to drive somewhere. Even then my arms still get colored ... the freckles don't help, either.

Oh, and I discovered that you still need to put sunscreen on your face during road trips - the sun reflecting off the pavement still gets you.

I made sure to cover everything in sunblock when i helped shovel up roof debris and all (we had a new roof put on) buuuut.... I missed my ears. So I dealt with peeling ears a few days later.

Every year, I seem to get badly burnt on my back.

Last year, I had a halter-top bathing suit, and it had really long tying strips. So, I had burns on each side of the strips, but a nice neat little strip of pale. It was awful.

Last summer my family and I went to Mackinac Island. I don't shave my head, but trim it without a guard. When I applied my roll-on sunblock, I missed a few spots and had lines of sunburn on my head...d'oh!

A few summers ago I was out in a pool with a friend and got sunburned from just about the water line on up...that wasn't fun either!

I'm about as pale as Chilipepper girl too! Dang Swede in me!

JR - I also went to Mackinac Island last summer and got a nice sun burn. Mine was from wearing a tank top and did not even think about sun block, was more interested in the Island.

My best was about 10 years ago I built a off road Karman Ghia that had no roof. The first day I drove it the temp outside was like 95 deg. in the shade. So I took my shirt off and went for a shake down drive (drove it for like three hours) the thing is I had installed 5 point racing harnesses, they left two stripes down my chest. Looked like I had suspenders on.

I've never managed to get the waterline burn, but I do somehow manage to only get a 4" wide strip down my stomach whenever that's exposed, lol

Yeah, Florida person here. It's brutal living here!

I often wear long sleeves in the car during road trips! My skin gets weird red speckles (not freckles) if I don't.

We aren't safe anywhere!

Oh PS -

We kept Noxema skin cream in the fridge just for sunburns. It felt VERY soothing on sunburned skin and kept it moisturized (although it was trouble cleaning it off when it dried).

I flew all night to Rio de Janerio in December (summer in the southern hemisphere) went straight to Copacobana beach and proceeded to fall dead asleep! I woke up totally fried - red! This was in the 70s before most had ever heard of aloe vera!

The next day I had to go to Sao Paulo for a weeks worth of meetings -I could feel the heat pour out from under the collar of my dress shirt. I've never been so burned in my life - I'd never do that again!

I'm of Swedish & Norwegian descent, so I'm hopelessly pale. I spent all day at a local outdoor art fair a few weeks ago, wearing a sleeveless "keyhole" style top, and I lathered on the SPF 70 everywhere... except the keyhole. I ended up with a 3-inch red circular burn which still hasn't completely faded.
