Who uses snow tires?!

Contributor: bayosgirl bayosgirl
Well, I needed new tires for my car anyway and when I was looking at tires online I found some Firestone snow tires for $70! I've never had snow tires before, but it seemed like a great deal and a good idea since even though they salt the roads here in Columbus, parking lots and such can be a real pain. I went ahead and ordered a set, and they arrived today. Free shipping--yeah! I will be taking them tomorrow to the tire place to have them put on. I found a great deal on the installation and alignment at a local shop, too. Anyway I was just wondering who has used snow tires before, and what are your thoughts?

Where I live, it doesn't snow, so I've had no need for them.

Living in the East Coast you kinda have to have them. I love them and already on my car for the upcoming winter season.

I live in Montana--you better believe I use them!!!! And tire chains--my truck is not 4x4, hubby's is, though. I am so used to driving in snow and ice that just the added bit of help from the studs are usually all I need to keep me on the road.

I live in sc. But I work at my brother in laws rim and tire shop. That really is a great deal on tires! Some snow tires can cost $300 or more per tire!

I live in an area that usually gets quite a bit of snow and ice in the winter so I've been considering getting them (this will be my first winter actually driving) but I've been convinced by other people who drive here regularly that I could just go for all-season tires that have been siped, so I'm about to go into Les Schwab next week to see what I can do. If all else fails, I can take the bus to work, which is pretty reliable in the winter, thankfully.

Put them on every winter. Wyoming winters can be bad, couple feet in under an hr or 3 months of ice cold and no snow. Better to be prepared. Actually got our first snow fall last night.

Well here in Columbus we don't get to much snow as is. But it be nice to have for when you do have them. I had them on my car in the past and they worked out well from where I am from in Massachusetts.

I've found that snow tires work better in snow but they're less ideal for anything other than driving on all snow. They usually will wear faster so you have to replace them sooner. They also likely have less grip on dry roads or just wet roads, so you might be trading-off grip on the wet salted roads for more grip in the snowy parking lot.

Chains and studs are illegal on most developed roads and are likely illegal in Columbus--they destroy the pavement of public roads too fast. Besides, if you're driving at high speeds or on dry roads they'll damage your wheel bearings too.

Overall the snow tires are unlikely to cause a problem for you but I think all-weather tires are a better choice in areas where the roads can be completely dry for much of the winter. Sounds like you got a good price, so it was worth experimenting, but I think you'll also see that you need to replace them sooner.

Well, they are mandatory after certain date in the country I live in. The snow came in last week, it's -10 Celsius now. I can't imagine how anyone would want to risk their lives with regular tires during the winter.

we get snow hit and miss...but we have a 4 wheel truck in case....I have used snow tires on my car before and they help. Depends on how much snow/slush you have as to whether it is worth it or not. It sounds like you got a good deal on them so at least you are ready!

I should have been using snow tires these past few years over here in Eastern WA. This winter is looking like it will be pretty mild though so I may just stick to chains this year like usual. We haven't gotten any significant snowfall yet and usually by this time of the year we've gotten a few snow storms that bring feet of snow.

Rarely snows here in the South...and if it does everyone is off school and work and buys up all the bread and stays home, lol.
