Sleep eating vs. Actual Eating

Contributor: HannahPanda HannahPanda 12/08/2011

I've gotten up to sleep eat probably a few times in my life, and my parents seemed to think it was always because I was a chubbier individual and just loved to eat, but after reading around other forums on websites, I've found a lot of people do it. I've always been curious as to why I've done it in the past, because it's only been a few times and now, I haven't done it for years. Perhaps something sparked it?

Perhaps it's a love of actual eating that sparks an individual to sleep eat, or maybe it's something much more psychological than all of that. I'm wondering how many users do this in their sleep.

I have never sleep eaten, but my husband used to do that all the time. He'll occasionally still do it nowadays too. I've always found it odd and wonder why it happens.

I've never sleep eaten but my mother and aunt both do it ALL the time.

I think it's funny. When I stay with them you can always hear them pitter pattering down the stairs to the kitchen and back to bed at like 3 am lol

I do not. My husband has and won't admit to it. I sit there and watch him every morning around 3 am. He gets a bowl of cereal and eats it, goes back to bed and snores!! He snores between bites!!! I need to get a cam that will record in the dark so he can see what he does every night. he blames it on me...problem? I do not eat cereal!!lol!!!

That's strange, I've never heard of this. But it's not surprising that it happens. Does anyone think it has to do with the emotional connection to eating? Very curious.

I'd never done it before until I started taking Ambien to help me sleep at night. I've found all kinds of weird concoctions in my room the morning after taking one.

I LOVE food, but it has never prompted me to sleep eat, maybe my OCD kept me in check!

I've heard of some medications causing sleep-eating for side effects. Ambien being the most promenant one.

I used to do it all the time, especially after my middle daughter was born. I went to a doctor because I was actually getting sick from it. I would get up and eat a whole half gallon of ice cream and a whole bag of doughnuts. Junk food mainly. The doctor said it was due to stress. At the time this happened I was living out in the boonies with my kids dad at their grandpas house. We fought alot and he hit me alot once I moved out it hasn't happened since..

I used to do this often, but I only do it every once in a while now. Not sure why, I always just brushed it off, as I sleepwalk and sleeptalk anyway!

I did that once thinking I was eating a huge marshmellow and I woke up and my pillow was gone.... LOL J/K

I never did sleep eat, I did answer the phone like I was at work a few times.

My mom said once that I just got up and made a sandwhich one night. You'd think with getting up and DOING something intensive would wake you up or snap you out of it, but I suppose not.
