interesting article here suggesting that some single people feel discriminated against because they're not married. Their married friends pity and patronize them, as though marriage is the ultimate goal in life and not wanting to get married, or have children, makes them a worse person.

This is augmented by the second link, which looks at myths about single people and advantages of marriages. Specifically the myth that marriage "domesticates" men who are "neanderthals" before marriage and turns them into constructive members of society. in response, bella depaulo's research suggest that married men treat their friends worse and work less.

Further some, myself included, find these myths to be sexist. It's as though men are sex crazed criminals who can only be fixed by the magical powers of women. This denigrates men, while elevating women to mystical status of "fixer" similar to the "magical Negro" literary trope (please note, that is its actual name, I'm not trying to be offensive).
