should i take this job

Contributor: T&A1987 T&A1987
I'm living with my mom (my girlfriend is living here too), job hunting and I have an offer, but it's not the best job. it's at a grocery store, 32 hours a week, 1-9 PM 4 days per week and the pay is $9.50 per hour. On the one hand it's a job, but it's also low pay, not that many hours, weird hours at that, no afternoons free time when I work, no time for the gym, not even remotely connected to my field and not really enough to pay for my share of an apartment, food and living expenses and my loans.

Further, grocery clerk was the first job I ever had and I hated it, granted that was at another store, but still. I already have experience in this field, so it won't boost my resume, nor is it a field I'd want to remain or advance.

I have some job possibilities down the line, but it's unclear. One job I might get won't start for another 2-3 weeks, if I get it, but it pays more with more hours. There are also some americorps jobs I'm in the middle of applying for (1st and 2nd interviews).

Any opinions? would it be better to take a sure thing, I probably won't like, for little pay, Or hold out for a possible better job down the line?

I would take it for the mean time but definitely keep your options open at other places. It's not like once you take it you have to stay there and your right its better than nothing! What if by chance you don't take it and then you don't get called back at the other places... then your in the same situation your in now. And if you take it and don't get called back by the others, usually at a store once your there you can change your shift to different hours. That's just my opinion... take it but still try to find some thing else that you would be happier with. Also it looks so much better on a resume having a job even if it's shitty than having a gap where you didn't work at all.

Personally, my thinking is that having a paycheck is better than not having a paycheck. You can always find something else, and there may even be room to move around once you're in the job. You can also always leave when you need to (or want to), but at least you'll be saving up some money in the meantime.

Bottom line is, it's up to you. I sometimes right out the pros & cons of doing something vs. NOT doing the thing - seeing it in black and white often makes my decision more clear to me.

Go, make some money while you are still looking for another job. Some money is better than none.

As hard as finding a job can be, I would take it. At least it is something. You can always leave if needed.

It is hard too find a job now a days. I would take it for the mean time you never know what will happen. You say it is only part time. Then maybe you can work the other one into a part time as well. Just incase the others don't pan out you have something.

Take it I am not sure where you live but $9.50 is a decent amount an more the minimum wage where I live. Money is money an it is more then what you had to begin with. Jobs are hard to come by so if you have the opportunity then jump on it. If this is a for sure you have the job whether you hate the type of work or not go for it. It will help out more then sitting on your buns making no money at all. If you get this job an another for SURE job comes along give a two weeks notice an move forward to the better job. So its only 32 hours a week again that is better then nothing an is only 8 hours shy of full time. Most of the time when you are told you will get X amount of hours usually you work more then that. Only you can decide though Good luck in whichever path you choose to go down

$9.50 an hour is significantly more than they make here at the grocery stores, or several other fields for that matter.

I say take the job. There are so many people that is looking for work and cannot find a job right now. There will be something better for you but, if you take this job, then at least you will have a paycheck.

Take it and keep looking! Some grocrey stores have great benefits, and unions. Just try it and see how you like it, it may be a great place, and keep looking for higher pay. Also, ask the manager how long it took them to get to their position and how long you have to be there for your first raise? Oh and don't count on a "possible job" until they tell you your hired. I held out for a job, when I didnt' get it, I was pissed I didn't take the first on in the meantime!

Thanks to everyone who offered a suggestion, but I rejected the job. I've worked in a grocery store before and it was the worst job of my life. It wasn't until my second job i realized not every job was a living agony. With several interviews this week and another job interview in its last process, I feel confident about finding something better soon.
