Do you think sexual orientation had anything to do with this crime?

Contributor: Petite Valentine Petite Valentine
A very sad story came to light a few hours ago. Two teenage girls in a same-sex relationship were shot in the head in a South Texas park. One passed away and the other is currently in the hospital in serious condition.

The complete story is here:
Friends reel from shooting of teen lesbian couple in Texas

It is extremely early in the investigation and the police either do not have or are not releasing much information. However, they did release this statement:

"Information from family and friends indicates that Mollie and Mary were engaged in a same-sex relationship. However, there is no current evidence to indicate the attacks were motivated by that relationship," {Portland Police Chief Randy Wright} said.

My heart goes out to both girls, but as I read through the article I began to wonder — did their sexual orientation have anything to do with the crime? Or is the media sensationalizing that angle because sex sells?

I leave it to the police to find the answer and bring the perpetrator(s) to justice, but I would like to know the initial thought of other Edenites.

Do you think the girls' sexual orientation had anything to do with the crime?

It makes sense to me that it likely was the case.

I have no idea. Gay Bashing is so common it's sick.

I hope this is resolved. Those poor girls and their families.

There are lots of reasons why something like this might have happened, I prefer not to speculate until more facts are available.

I'd wait until more details have been released. It may have been or may not have been.

I think it's going to come to light that one of these girl's was involved with an unsavory character and she left him for the other girl and he was pissed enough about it "to do something". I can just hear the rationalizations now, "how dare that bitch leave me, is my cock not good enough for her?".

Well, that's how it sounds in my head. Maybe I've just watched too many episodes of Law & Order SVU.

It's sick and disgusting, whatever the reasoning is. No one has the right to kill someone else unless it's straight-up self defense.

I think it's extremely possible that it had something to do with it. It's, unfortunately, not that hard to believe.

I prefer not to speculate until there is more to the story. For all we know this could have been a love triangle, a drug deal gone bad, or just a random shooting. The news always tries to make something out to be more then it is.

Those poor girl and there families need justice! I hope what happened does come to light!

Only time will tell whether or not sexual orientation played a role. Even if it didn't, the media is going to play up the relationship between the victims to sell the story.

I would say yes especially because it's Texas where most people are driven by religion and the need to preserve what they perceive as morality. I do live in Texas currently by the way.

The complete story is ... more
My first impression was the media "sensationalizing." That is why I take everything I read with a grain of salt... I so never thought I'd use that expression! Lol.

The story, no matter WHY they were shot, is horrid. I don't think ANY reason outdoes another. I don't care if they were shot because they were female period. There's no way it will ever be anything but terrible. No reason for this crime is worse than any other reason it may have been committed. What's important is that the family and the one who's still alive receive everything they need in this struggle. It doesn't matter why it was done to them. It matters THAT it was done to them. Any reason the media could come up with will be just terrible. I think they need to focus on tearing the bastard who did it a new one!

Who knows why crazies shoot and do the things they do. It could've been because the crazy had nasty feelings toward women. Holding resentment over being rejected by women--read somewhere that was the most common reason for males who commit crimes against women--maybe because his mommy was no good to him so he's out to hurt all women. Either way, I just hope the family doesn't have suffer even more at the hands of GOSSIPERS and media.

A small bit of good news. The brother of the surviving victim has spoken out, and he described her recovery as impressive. The updated article is here:

Brother of lesbian teen shot in head: She's 'fighting'

In addition to the physical and emotional toll, the shooting is also taxing the family financially. From the article:

Chapa’s father had just started a new job in West Texas and had not yet enrolled for health insurance, so Kristene is without coverage. They are seeking donations to help them pay for the medical care, which doesn’t yet have an end in sight.

They are accepting donations via WePay.
