Running the heat at night

Contributor: Cat E. Cat E.
When you go to bed at night during cold weather, do you turn the heat off completely or just turn it down? I turn it off completely, then when I get up in the mornings, I turn it back up.

It frequently reaches negative temperatures here in the winter so we don't ever turn off the heat. We just leave the thermostat alone most of the time. It's set at about 64 degrees during the week and 60 degrees when my dad is home on the weekends. We actually plan on turning it down a bit at night when we move into our new house to help keep our gas bills down.

I actually turn it up at night. I have a young son that gets sick a lot during the winter. He has the coldest room in the house.

We just leave it on. My wife has a theory that it cost more to shut it off and turn it back on, VS just leaving it on.

I have a wood-burning stove, no crazy heating bills for me!

Thankfully we don't pay for our heat our landlord does that but right now...I have to call him because after two complaints that the building is freezing, he still hasn't turned no one's heat on. I'm sitting here in jeans and a sweater with my jacket on just trying to keep warm. I wanna be warm!

Ours is on a timer. It goes way down between midnight and 6:00 AM.

We have our heat set at 66 degrees from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m., then 68 degrees for the rest of the day. When I feel too cold to fall asleep, I'll microwave my Bed Buddy to warm my feet up.

It is in the Negatives here in the winter (coldest ever recorded was -20), so we rarely turn off the heat. We use pace heaters to help curb the gas bill.

It's on a timer to go down at night so I can have a bazillion blankets and curl up under them

I grew up with a wood burning stove and feel bad that my parents had to constantly run up and down the stairs to put wood in it!
