Do you believe that root canals cause illness/health problems? If so, please share why.

OK guys, sorry about all the crazy dental posts, but after having a root canal today and dealing with an awful wisdom tooth that will be pulled in 5 days, I've been doing some research. Since I'm kind of stuck at home in pain until I have my wisdom tooth taken out, I've been a little bored too! Lol.

I didn't know I was getting a root canal until 2 days before so I had no time to do much research and well, I like to know EVERYTHING. I was reading some info today that said root canals DO cause serious illness and health problems. I really couldn't find much info on what illnesses they're accused of causing so I dug farther.

According to the American Assosication of Endodonics, root canals absolutely do NOT cause health problems/illness. Here are just a few of the things I learned about this whole topic.

(Info found from the AAE)

1. Research shows that a person with a root canal filling is no more likely to develop illness than someone without the root canal filling.

2. A small number of dentists claim that root canals contribute to disease and illness.
"This claim is based on the outdated research performed by Dr. Weston Price from 1910-1930. His research stated that bacteria trapped in the teeth during root canal treatment can cause almost any type of disease, including arthritis, heart disease, kidney disease and others."

"Researchers now believe that the earlier findings may have been caused by poor sanitation and imprecise research techniques that were common in the early 1900s"

According to the AAE, teeth that are edodonically treated PROPERLY do not, in fact cause illness.

That's a lot of info. Sorry, but I tend to get a little crazy when I have a lot of time on my hands.

My question is, do you believe that root canals do cause health problems/illness and disease? If so, will you please share why you think this? If not, feel free to share your ideas as well! I was just curious.

To me, it seems that there could be complications with oral health if the treatment wasn't done correctly. Ahem... such as by a doctor in Massachusetts who uses pieces of paper clips in his patient's root canals instead of stainless steel! (true!) But I don't see how it could cause serious illness. I'm no expert of course. I know little about this stuff. However, I'm certainly hoping that it's only a myth. It would really be suckish if having a tooth treated could turn around and bite you in the rear like that!

Have you ever had an illness that you believe was brought on by a root canal? Do you know someone else who has? (Sorry, I'm really paranoid!) Lol. Feel free to share any opinions, ideas, stories, etc!

I personally have had an illness of some sort that I believe was brought on by a previous root canal.
I have read about studies that do show that root canals can cause illness. (Please do share.)

Any procedure could I guess, if a bad job was done and/or it got infected really bad. D:

I mean, of course there's a chance something could go wrong. It could get infected. You could get MRSA. You could die. It could all go horribly, horribly wrong.

But you probably won't. If the complication rate was higher than acceptable, there'd probably be a whole lot more media blitz about how root canals are destroying the world one molar at a time.

If you're going to a reputable dentist and taking care of yourself, post-proceedure, you're probably going to be just fine.

NOT getting a root canal when you need one will cause illness and disease, end of line.

If it was linked to serious side effects and health problems down the road, doctors wouldn't be so insistent about getting root canals.

However, there is a risk for anything, so that's something to take into consideration. But I feel like in almost every case, the potential benefits outweigh the risks.

Ditto. Stop googling weird shit lol.

I've had two. I lived, no problems.

One I got when a tooth broke during a cavity filling so I had even less notice than you lol.

I believe that tooth INFECTION can cause it to spread (and even become sepsis, meaning that it spreads into your bloodstream and goes wherever the @#$@ it wants). If you have a tooth infection, you can get a terrible infection and die. If you have a rootcanal to remove the infection and that gets infected you can die. So... Just don't let your mouth get infected.

Not getting a root canal when you need one is more dangerous than getting the root canal. Having said that, dentists that understand the risks can take precautions to minimize the risk to the patient.

Just one more reason to pick a good dentist - even if you hate them!

The risks of never dealing with your teeth at all can lead to much worse complications, like heart disease and infections that could lead to blood infections, are probably higher than the risks associated with root canals.

But, in the end, stepping outside of your house for any reason could expose to you to any number of circumstances that would potentially end your life so you just have to take a risk every now and again and hope for the best and try not to expect the worst.

I don't think so. Atleast I hope not. I have already dealt with enough.

This is my experience. About three weeks ago I had a root cannal. The pain was very minimal no big deal. A few days later my mouth started it itch. It spread through out my whole mouth. It was driving me crazy. When I called my dentist's office the secretary almost started laughing at me and said she had never heard that one before. When she called me back she was told to tell me it was just the healing process and if it persisted after a few days to call back. It went away after 48 hours.

Then I relized the skin inside my mouth was peeling off and it bled pretty bad but eventually stoped bleeding after constant pressure. The inside of my mouth looked so creepy, pale with little purple veins everywere.

I went back in a few days ago to get my permenent crown put on. My hygentist asked how I was after the cannal. After I told her she said it was strange but stranger things have happened. She was having trouble getting the crown on so my dentist came over. My wisdom teeth are messing up my mouth so bad in three weeks time my teeth have shifted so much my crown did not fit. They made new molds to make a new crown. He also said that would explain the itching after the cannal. My dentist said we would discuss getting my wisdom teeth taken out, but never did. My wisdom teeh were the reason I had gone to the dentist in the first place. They were driving me crazy!

That's my experience so far. Yeah that was alot to write. Hope this is helpful in some way.

Well, ANY procedure is going to have risks, of course. That said, so long as you go to a good dentist/oral surgeon and take care of yourself as best as you can during your recovery time, these risks are minimal.

Not getting a root canal (or any other dental procedure) when you need one, however, will definitely end poorly for you.

And I don't hate the dentist, actually. I don't get all happy when it's time for a checkup, but I don't really hate going, either.

Oh, Kendra, you must have had such a traumatic experience at the dentist. Didn't he do his best to put you're fears at ease? I voted NO.

Do you, or any woman for that matter, have the same anxiety or trauma when visiting your OBGYN? I can understand when a guy has his prostate checked, but seriously, is it the same with your gynecologist?
