The New York Times: Sally Ride

Sally Ride went into the record books when she flew into orbit aboard the Challenger in 1983 and became both the first woman and youngest (at that time) American in space.

In addition to being a trailblazer, she founded Sally Ride Science which promotes children's interest in science, math and technology.
