We raised are kids only having pure maple syrup. When my daughter started doing sleepovers at friends, I remember being surprised when she asked why we used the pure maple syrup, rather than Log Cabin or Aunt Jemima like all her friends. We gave her all the taste and health reasons, but in the end we ended up having Log Cabin in the pantry, so that my daughter had it available when we hosted a sleepover.
I know that maple syrup might seem a be a bit silly, but if you think about it with regard to peer pressure, it really isn't. All of us growing up have faced some form of peer pressure. Even something seemingly so innocuous like maple syrup demonstrates the subtle pressures placed upon our kids.
