Prop 8 is being heard by the US Supreme court this week; how do you expect them to rule?

California's Proposition 8, which outlawed same-sex marriage in that state, will be argued in front of the US Supreme Court tomorrow (March 26, 2013). Read all about it.

At issue is whether banning same-sex marriages violates the Constitutional guarantee of equal protection under the law. The court could rule broadly, which would invalidate all laws denying same-sex couples the right to marry, or they could rule narrowly, striking down California's ban without affecting other states.

I think most of us Edenites are in favor of marriage equality, but what do you EXPECT from the Supreme Court?

Unfortunately, I can see them ruling that same sex marriage is illegal.

I hope not, and I think that's EXTREMELY unlikely.

I could see 3 of the justices voting that way (Scalia, Alito and Thomas) and possibly Chief Justice Roberts, but definitely not Kagan, Sotomayor, Breyer, Ginsburg or Kennedy.

However, I wouldn't be surprised for them to make a VERY narrow ruling, one which strikes down Prop 8, but leaves the marriage issue in the hands of the states. But I'm hoping they issue a broader ruling, which strikes down all the laws against same-sex marriage, but that may not be terribly likely, either. We'll just have to wait and see.

I'd like them to make a broad ruling that would make gay marriage legal in every state, but I think it's more likely that they would limit the ruling to California.
