I think it was better towards the end. The beginning was really confusing and frustrating to try and keep up with conversation. Towards the half-way point, it definitely became much more managable.

I think the biggest thing is to think about how structured you want the discussion to be. If you want discussion about certain things at certain times, I'd suggest posting a schedule at the start. Otherwise, you get people typing a comment who get two or three pages behind before they can hit the "Post" button and their comment might not be on topic any more, but they have no way of knowing that you've moved on.
But I think the more free-for-all discussion tonight worked fine. (It might be more problematic if Porn Club expands to a significantly larger group of people, though.) less

Oh, and while I understand your desire to keep it in the forum for several reasons, I don't get the " would kill the public view of any one, at any time" part, as it seems to me you could always post a transcript afterwards (and have a forum topic for followup conversation)

Yeah. There's really no way to enforce if someone gets off topic though. And I think that moderators should make sure to use a bold (and large) font to give topic changes. Otherwise it'll get caught in regular posts.

Chat rooms have been brought up many times before, and shot down by top management, the owner, and programmers - we have no real reason to develop something so wiley when there are plenty of good ones out there for people to use off of Eden. It is just not who we are and what we do. We're a public view platform. We don't want to be a chat room community.

Yeah, when you're frantically hitting refresh and trying to catch up, it can be easy to miss posts, especially if your browser decides to randomly scroll to the top (which mine did a few times) .. then it can be hard to find exactly where you were, so you can miss things.

I think forums are way easier to handle; in chat rooms the topic moves so fast that if someone isn't the fastest typer, then the conversation is already ten steps away before they can articulate it. On a forum, that idea can keep going and being integrated back in.
I also really love the idea of directional questions.

It gets a little hectic when it is active, but that (in my opinion) makes it a little more thrilling! But overall, I like the flow and space of the forum conversations. I have done a number with the CEC, and it's fun!

I like the idea of structured sessions. Keeping people on track is a good idea, because there was a lot of chatter. And don't get me wrong, chatting is fun, but when I am trying to watch my 2 year old while participating (or at least reading), hitting refresh every 5 seconds just to keep on top of the off-topic convo is kind of annoying.
