Piercing and Stretching Questions!

Contributor: MaryExy MaryExy 11/13/2011

I guess there are two main questions I'm curious about here:
1. What piercings you've considered most painful and least painful in your experience?
2. What materials do you use for your initial piercings and stretches?

I just got my navel redone and got a VCH in the same sitting. The piercer I used was the first one I'd ever talked to that used titanium for all initial piercings; I don't think he even had any steel jewelry in the store. He said one of his top reasons for not using steel was the small amount of nickel that was in even surgical-grade steels. When I asked him about stretching my ears (gauging or getting fleshies, those are some other terms I've heard), he said titanium or borosilicate glass would be best, since the skin is opening up a bit with stretching.

As for pain, I had my mentor with me and holding my hand through both piercings. For the navel, I didn't move, make a sound, or squeeze her hand at all. For the VCH, I did this whole body twitch and squeezed her hand super hard. Now that I think about it, I don't think the VCH actually hurt that much; I feel like it was because I expected very little pain compared to the navel, and the pain was actually a bit higher. I'm getting my nipples done once the VCH heals, though, and so far everyone I've talked to says those hurt the most...

So anyways, onto the questions for you guys!

I'll keep the poll choices to number of piercings and whether you vividly remember the pain of any of them. I feel like actually saying how bad the pain was is easier in writing, especially since someone who has only had their navel done would only really be able to say that was their most painful piercing...

So vote, then explain the pain level of each piercing you remember. If you have friends who have told you about their piercing experiences, feel free to talk about those.

I think many younger folks underestimate how scary facial piercings look to older folks. I don't know that is the message that they are trying to convey....but they do it non the less. I know that there is more and more the culture of "don't judge me, unless you know me", but we are a visual animal and we DO judge based on appearance. It is how we have, for millions of years, judged friend or foe. Threat or safety.

You said "feel free" to talk about "your piercings", but I figure it is worth letting those who are getting them know they are telegraphing things about themselves...or at least the perception of themselves, to others. Just something to think about.

One more note....many people do this piercing and stretching (dinner plate earlobes), when they are younger. If you honestly think it will NOT effect your chances at MANY jobs, MANY opportunities, then "express your individuality" any way you want, but when you DON'T get the job, or the grad school admission or the opportunity you really otherwise deserve, be aware...EVERY choice we make in life has consequences and yes, altering our appearance has those too.

This is said just as a wake up call, warning and education about the real world, from someone who knows personally of a few young people, people who in ANY other situation would have gotten a great opportunity, but lost it due to a major tattoo or piercing. (And before you answer with hate, be aware, I am one of the people that WANTED to hire them, when they showed some amazing credentials...despite the fact I too was "disturbed" by their appearance.

My WHOLE point is that there may well be PAIN with piercing...but it may NOT be the pain of a pinch when skin is broken...if you catch my drift. That PAIN may be profound, but come MUCH later.

You asked for honest....there is a tidbit of honest.

I have three piercings; earlobes, helix, and navel. They're not too unusual. The cartilage and navel piercings were done semi recently (~2 years) so I remember I was more taken aback by the shock of having a needle pushed through my skin instead of the actual pain. Ooh, how unpleasant.

I have been pierced over 25 times. The most painful was my Venoms, because unlike a normal tongue piercing, they go through the muscle and hurt like a 8 bitches on a bitch boat. The center of your tongue has no muscle and you can pierce it with a toothpick. Next to that, my septum was very stingy, and my nipples barely hurt.

I gauged my ears myself using hard plastic stretchers from a friend of mine. It hurt a bit getting it through, but nothing huge. Make sure it is well lubed. and dont just jump to a huge one. take your time. I did 8, 6 and then 4 and 4 is where I am staying.

My nipple piercing did not bother me that much. granted, I dont have that much feeling in them. I know people that have had pain and others that have not. Everyone is different so it is not easy to give a general answer.

I really dont remember if my navel hurt. It has been over 10 years since I got it. I know my tragus didnt but I could hear it crunching through the cartilage which was pretty weird.

I have 17 current piercings, and 1 retired (a failed triangle that lasted only a couple days). The most painful were the nipples, with the septum as a close runner-up. Everything else was minimally painful, just a quick pinch and that's all.

Have two piercings in each earlobe so two pairs. Pierced at 20g, now at 16g. Probably going to work them to a 12g, but no further. I don't like the idea of seeing daylight through my ears.
Ironically enough the first pair hurt more than the second. But that's probably just because it was a piercing gun rather than a needle piercing.
Desperately want a helix piercing and an eyebrow piercing but that probably won't happen.

I have my ears pierced, but I don't really remember those hurting at all. I also have my cartiledge pierced on one ear, and that hurt a little bit but it was mostly a little sore and red for a while. The pain wasn't too bad.

Him: 2 piercings, both in his penis

Me: Both nipples, 3 in each ear, 1 in my nose, one in my tongue, labrae, used to have my naval but had to take it out when pregnant.

I have 2 in each ear, my tongue, and my navel. My tongue was the weirdest feeling piercing and made it awkward to communicate at work. I resorted to sign language. I was VERY unlucky with my navel piercing because I had a bundle of nerves concentrated around it. I whited out from the pain. I think my next piercings will be nipples.

I have each ear pierced 3 times. they weren't bad at all. I also have my nose pierced twice, since I had to get it re-done after it got damaged and the scar tissue wouldn't heal right. The second time I pierced my nose myself (stupid to do, but I was a teen), and honestly it isn't that bad except for the innermost layer of tissue.
I have a good friend who has ears, tongue, nose, eyebrow all done, and she said for her the nose was the worst for pain, but the tongue took the longest to heal.

I have had many, but now only have my lip, ears and belly button. In the past I've had my nipples, eyebrow. Not all at the same time. I do miss my nipple shields because they look so pretty! I've had several ear piercings, but now only have 2 on each. I had the top of my ear pierced and ended up with a terrible keloid that I had surgery on only to find a nerve in there and I was able to feel the cutting the entire time! A truly horrific experience. After that I've been careful with piercings. I went to look into getting a dermal over the summer, but nobody in my area or for a very long way from my area was anywhere near experienced in that and hell no! Lol. That is one thing I won't be a guinea pig to. One piercer told me right now they were doing huge deals on those since they're first timers with dermals. No thanks! Lol. Too bad though because I want one bad! I've thought about travelling to nashville to a good piercer for that.

Watch out if you come to Tennessee, the piercer I went to said the state decided that dermals are a medical procedure now. He thinks they'll eventually change their minds, but for now piercers in Tennessee aren't allowed to do dermals. It's sad, my piercer's specialty is dermals and I had so many cool ideas for them

Nice job on the VCH. I've always wanted one but am thinking it'd be too painful. From your description though it sounded doable and worth it.

My microdermal in the hollow of my throat hurt like a bitch, but that's because he used a needle instead of a dermal punch. My nipples were also pretty painful, but nothing too bad.

VCH was nothing. I mean, the skin is so thin that you barely feel a thing. Same thing with outer labia.

I've had (going from top to bottom):

bridge, both nostrils, septum, standard ear piercings (second holes), lobes stretched to 3/4", throat microdermal, both nipples, upper and lower navel, VCH, and inner labia x3

The only thing I have pierced is my ears and that was done when I was a baby so I dont remember the pain associated with it. I'm afraid of needles, so I wouldn't ever consider getting anything else pierced. But more power to those that have.

I've had my ears pierced multiple times but they always end up closing up because I tend to not keep jewelry in them, I had my left nostril pierced when I was in high school but the jewelry got lost and it closed up before I could put something back in, and now I have my septum pierced which I love. I also plan on getting my nipples pierced sometime soon. I am a chicken so I always get really really nervous before each piercing and then I'm always shocked by how little it hurts. I actually love getting pierced because of the adrenaline rush that comes with it.

Helix (top of the ear) - Hurt like a bitch, but went away quick. I was 16 and my Mom came with me. She didn't hold my hand or anything. This one got infected, but that was most likely due to the fact that I didn't realize that I was not cleaning it properly. My mother's no nonsense approach to cleaning it healed it up within a week. I have never changed the jewelry in this piercing.

Belly Button - Didn't hurt to pierce, but hurt to take care of and wear seat belt, lean against things etc. This one was pierced with titanium and very shallow. I was told that this would be better for when I used barbells; what a lie that was. When I wore barbells and sat down, they would flip over and catch in my belt with yanked them when I stood up. I've never ripped it out, thank God. When I had this piercing I preferred a ring. I was also 16.

Second hole in ear lobe - My present to myself for my 18th birthday

Tragus (that little nubby thing that sticks out before the opening of your ear) - This one hurt the least and was pierced with a bio-plastic nose screw. I love this piercing. It is the only one I developed a keloid with. I dealt with this by poking the keloid with a sterilized pin and rubbing in vitamin e oil daily. Now, it looks great!

Nipples - The most painful piercing I have ever had and I have both done because even though it hurt, I could not leave it unsymmetrical. I swore at my piercer and left bloody half-moons on the back of my then-boyfriend's hands. That being said, she gave me the piercings for free and was wonderful about how to take care of them. They are the piercings that I have had absolutely no issues with.

Note* I hated them at first because she pierced me with huge rings to allow for swelling, when I changed them I used barbells that were too big. Switched to smaller rings which were fine until I finally figured out that my nipples were small enough that I could actually use an eyebrow barbell in them and still have room to allow for circulation. I love these piercings now! You just have to find the right jewelry!

Oh! I personally do not go for expansions only because I had a boyfriend once who had them and took them out. I found that they smelled awful for one and they obviously do not heal over like normal piercings.

And I did get my belly button re-pierced two years later. It hurt much less and healed quicker due to better care and advice. It looks amazing now and it never gets caught on anything.

I've had my ears pierced since I was 4, but I don't wear earrings because I'm metallergic. I had my nose pierced for a little bit and would wear sterling silver studs, but I got tired of messing with it. I remember that it didn't hurt at all. I took my brother with me.

I got my tragus done over 6 months ago and it wasn't bad at all pain wise. He pierced me but I wasn't convinced it was over and said "that was it?"

I'm thinking of getting my naval next fall or winter (healing time can be 6 months, and I want to go to pools and such) and I hear that hurts more than ear piercings.

Solid point. Everyone tattoo and pierce your genitals in order to not scare the senior citizens! LOL. Just a joke really, but I did take out my nose piercing because I couldn't volunteer at a hospital with it. I'm also a Crim Justice major with tattoos, but they can be covered. Visible tattoos in a prison setting can cause trouble.

I've had 7, currently none. I liked them, but the initial upkeep is a drag, and they interfered with my work so I removed them. The most painful was the prince albert. Worse than the needle was the pain of the steel tube inserted into the urinary meatus (pee hole). Ever have a foley catheter placed? It's like that but with steel. Ouch.

I have many many retired piercings & piercings that were done multiple times

Piercings dont hurt me... getting more than one piercing done in a sitting kinda hurts me... I'll be honest getting all six lip piercings done in one sitting didnt "hurt" but my body kinda went in to a shock..

I would never consider stretching, I do like little streches on some people but I'm in the business world so classic piercings are the only acceptable ones, at least the ones that can be seen. I had my belly button but it got infected. It hurt so much over the few days after i had it done.

This poll isn't for materials used for stretches, just the initial piercings where the jewelry goes in right after a needle. I'm including some of the materials only found in plugs typically because I know some people do dermal punching instead of stretching...

If you had different materials for each piercing, please specify what materials you had for each, whether the material choice changed due to something you learned between piercings, etc.

Material would refer to the piece that actually goes through the hole. If you had a barbell with a steel bar and plastic balls, you would say it was a steel piece of jewelry.

And before anyone comments, I know that some of these materials usually have a big fat NO tacked onto them, but those materials might come into use if someone just had a friend pierce them instead of a professional piercer (or even pierced themselves).

I've always used gold. Organic materials such as bone aren't good for a fresh piercing that has yet to heal, although they do look really cool!

Contributor: Lucidity Lucidity
There are only two acceptable materials when getting a piercing, and if your piercer knows what they will doing, they will only use one of the two; surgical grade stainless steel, and real gold (if you have allergies). There is nothing else that should go in there until your piercing is 100% healed. I've seen so many infections happen this way.

For initial uhh I'm not sure, the fist ones I got were sterling silver I think... not sure but my ears didn't heal right around them so I let them heal up.

Years later I got piercings again with those little hand held guns you can buy at local beauty supply stores and my friend did them for me. They healed just fine. I just can't wear fake gold (or any "fake" metal I guess dunno what it's made out of but I'm allergic x_x)

I don't remember any pain from either. It was just the noise that got to me haha

This does not include initial piercings, this would be jewelry that was put in after stretching the ear with a taper (or the taper material if you just left the taper in as jewelry). Again, if you used different materials, explain why. And say what you had gauged, that may be interesting to hear (I know the piercer said I could stretch my VCH a bit later).

Also, I know online many sources say not to use silicone plugs for stretching. I assumed this was because the material is somewhat squishable, but many sources have said it's because it's porous. Anyone know whether this is the pure silicone we know and love as a toy material!?

Silicone and glass are fine for stretching, as are steel and gold, but stay away from bone, plastic, silver, wood, et cetera, until it is totally healed.

I did most of my lobe stretching with plastics and never had any issues. I've also had bone earrings (which I'm pretttty sure were a bit bigger sized than I was used to, so I'll count it as part of the stretching) and my ears didn't like them as much, they got a bit red and produced more of that lovely ear cheese than usual.

I sized my nostrils up a bit with steel, and that was fine.

I usually stretch naturally instead of with tapers. I just use heavier jewelry so that the weight does it for me. If you don't want to do that, you can actually wrap your jewelry in bondage tape (yes, the kind on here) or teflon tape. Do a couple of wraps a day and make sure to change it often.

I learned that silicone plugs the next size up are never a good idea to stretch with because of an issue I had.

I always use acrylic pinchers to stretch, actually. Mostly because I'm lazy and they're cheap. XD As long as you keep them clean, it's no issue!

I had a few stretches because I wanted to be able to use larger jewelry. I didn't necessarily go and get into the gauging thing except slightly on the ear lobes. However when it came to belly button, nose (slightly, once again, I wanted to use larger jewelry), and lip (sounds awful, but totally practical).

I tried titanium because I heard it was very safe. For some reason, maybe allergies, who knows - I got infections. Luckily with some Bactine and antibiotics, they went away quickly and I didn't event have to remove the piercings. However... my doctor told me to use glass! He said that if an infection starts, glass is the absolute best material to leave in your skin until the infection passes. I ended up liking it all so much that all I ever used was glass.

This may have lead to my obsession with glass objects (even sex toys!). Who knows! Anyhow, I will tell you that glass was wonderful. Things like Acrylic are a little sketchy. They scratch easily and involve a whole lot of unnecessary cleaning. Feel free to message me if you have questions. I'll try to write my whole experience but I'm half asleep.

I tried acrylic for only a few days and hated them. So I didn't really count them in the poll. One fell on the ground (from my ear lobe), scratched like crazy, and I figured the hubby could sand it and polish it but it was just a pain! So I went back to metals which was steel. Steel gave me no infection, but I didn't like the price. Absolutely ridiculous. I found very cheap but high quality glass plugs (ear lobes) and other glass jewelry online (sorry I forget the store, just search it on bing and it's bound to show up for at least $2 an item). I tried it out and they are fantastic. I even went as far as to get some regular earrings made of glass. they look classy, come in tons of styles and you just can't go wrong. Plus, who doesn't love something that is hypoallergenic?

Cleaning is easy. Hot water, antibacterial soap, and voila! You want to keep hot to a minimal hot. No boiling unless the consumer says it is okay. This type of glass is strong, but it is thinner. So keep in mind that if you throw your hot glass piece into cold water it will shatter because it's so thin. However, as far as dropping your pieces... I've yet to break one. I think the only thing that broke on me EVER was a nose stud made of glass. But it was SO thin... so it makes sense. And that's just my fault.

You can also use an antibacterial spray. Nothing can really damage borosilicate glass so you're good to go. I highly recommend it. Especially if you have sensitive skin or you're a little scared to use metals. I've introduced many friends to glass and they love it.

I've only used steel for stretching - I wouldn't use anything else (b/c I can't afford the nicer metals).

I want to stretch my ear, but I'm a little worried about what I'd be left with if I decided I no longer wanted it in a few years time, so I just wear a fake plug for now.

Oh as long as you don't damage the cartilage in your ear it should heal up :3 After you bypass a 0 and 00 (8mm and 9.5-10mm respectively) it's a little harder to heal up and it will always be a little 'loose' but is completely possible to heal. Ya just gotta be careful not to damage stuff during the stretch.

For stretching I've always gone with glass or acrylic though I did stretch with stone once. I'd def. recommend something with some weight if you plan to continue stretching and find something that tapers, it's easier to slide it in gradually. Acrylic isn't the best but it was all I had access to in the early days hehe I'm at 7/17 (11 mm) now andd I think the most painful stretch for me was from an 8 to a 6. My piercings are in my ears though ;3 but it probably works similar (I'd assume) for other piercings as well.

I just wear uhh stone plugs now. One pair is obsidian and the I don't remember what the other is x_x
