Okay Cell Phone generation.....when is the last time you used a "pay phone"?

London did away with the iconic red pay phone boxes. ATT (Bell) has closed up many (most) of their US pay phones. No one is using them. We live in a cell phone world now.

When is the last time you used a pay phone?

I know they keep the ones outside of jailhouses operational. I haven't used one in quite a long time. Years.

I would have to say about 20 years ago, they had one in my High School right outside the office and that was the phone we had to use.

I used one in London about 3 years ago, but in the states at least in Southern California there aren't even any around.

I used one in 2002 when I was a foreign exchange student in Europe and I wanted to call home. I had a cell phone at that point but it did not work over there and I didn't want to make my host family pay for my phone calls, so I bought a phone card and would talk to my parents on the pay phone a few blocks away from the house.

I also used one once at an airport maybe 5 or 6 years ago. My cell phone died and I had forgotten my charger and I needed to call a friend and tell them where to pick me up.

Those are the only times I have ever used a pay phone

I used the ones in airports all the time! The last time was probably 2006?

I have literally never used a pay hone in my life. The only one I can remember even seeing is one that is on my college campus right now in Central Florida. I'm 20, so I guess that gives you an idea lol

Never. I got a cell phone in the seventh grade (mind you, I'm only 21) and before that I was too young to have ever needed a payphone.

Not since I was a kid. I received my first cell phone when I was in 6th grade. I had to walk home from school and it was a bit of a hike. My mom was worried, so she bought me a phone. It was pretty basic, but I loved it. I mostly used it to call her, but it was still really cool.

<_< Literally never, though I have some fond memories of watching my mom use them when I was little.
We didn't often have the money for a home phone or a cell back then so we'd walk up to a pay phone a few times a week and I'd run around and play while she was making the needed calls, though she always kept a watchful eye on me to make sure I didn't run into the street or get hurt.

Then we'd stop into a little convenience store and she'd give me a couple dimes to buy a few pieces of candy and once in a while, we'd share a little bottle of soda as a treat too.

Why? What is it about "outside" Jailhouses that would make a pay phone necessary or desirable?

I wonder if there are any on college campuses anymore. I cannot imagine a college (or high school) student without a cell phone as handy as their hand.

Good point. We fly a lot and interestingly we see what used to be phone booths, but I think now they are internet terminals and pay as you go computer screens. Going to have to look again, next time I fly.

London, I know, is doing away with them. They are selling off the iconic phone booths too. Now all they are is a posting place for "call out escort services". Enter one and there are a thousand glossy six by six pages taped all over for "local girls" with "local numbers". No kidding.

Wow, I think it's been almost a decade since I've used one. You can still find them in certain parts of NYC but frankly they're so disgusting I don't want to touch them, much less put one anywhere near my mouth.
